Matt Sparks from Southern Illinois.
What about the womens job? Heard a rumor about Connelly. Any truth to it?
Connelly is out. The new coach will oversee both genders in distance with an assistant to help.
Has ND had their press release yet?

"by announce this great hire" did you mean re-post the position and spam it out??? lmfao
Amateur hour reporting here.
obviously they are still looking:

Idaho conducting phone interviews today for a handful of candidates. Seems like they might of gotten burned by someone who accepted and then bailed.

I know he has published a book or two, but has he really done anything?
Nope Kentucky has hired more Stanford Coaches, Toby Stevenson has been hired.
Stevenson was hired for multi events. Still has sprint/hurdles coaching position open. Anxious to know to who they bring in to replace Hall.
Having followed this thread closely, it seems to me that Notre Dame cross country is on life support.
The AD begged Miltenberg to take the head coach job and offered it to two other proven distance coaches. They ALL turned it down. The AD basically threw in the towel for competing at the highest level in cross country and hired Turner to lead the TRACK team because he was the only guy left.
Now it seems Turner fired Connelly and is combining the programs under his old coworker Sparks with Carlson as an assistant. To combine under a guy that has never had a team to the NCAA's and keep an assistant that has never coached anyone does not sound like they are committed primarily to cross country. Sounds like Turner wants to make it a sprint program or at best a balanced team and has hired lackeys that are happy to be there and will go along with that strategy.
Sparks is a good coach- Notre Dame will be fine.
The school recruits itself, don't forget- Piane was a Western Illinois/Loras grad when he assumed the job. Sparks has way more experience- and will be successful.
Don't know if he'd be at all interested, but really think Idaho needs to pursue Pat McCurry for XC/Distance.

This has already been discussed, but I think McCurry was runner up to take over the program. He would be a great choice to lead cross country at Idaho, but will he leave CofI and the Boise area for the title of asst. cross/track and $45K.
Does anyone even know if he applied for the asst. position after the initial rejection?

Coach Ray is a great coach... Spent a few years kicking butt at the D2 level... I believe he as a few d2 national champions and some all americans under his belt..Looking forward to what he can do with some real talent

in other words, they couldn't get anyone else to take the position.

Sparks may be the best coach in the world but one athlete with All-American honors and no team experience at NCAA's in a 17 year career may not get high school kids and coaches too excited. The reality is that stuff matters in recruiting.
The biggest problem though for Notre Dame cross country is hiring a sprint coach as head coach. There is no way he is going to put a higher premium on cross country than a well-rounded track team, which is essentially what every other private school has done.
Who knows, maybe the AD wanted a balanced team and that is why the top distance coaches said no.

He'll be right at home, then. Isiah Young and Ricky Robertson are gone. all that they will get is D II talent, and on the women's team; maybe D III.
Delaware done and done! Great hire. Will bring in some big energy for those athletes.
