Even more impressive is she trains in Houston TX. Can't get any worse than the area around Rice or any area for that matter in Houston.

Actually today in Houston not a cloud in the sky. And will get up to 52. Could not ask for better weather in which to train.
May-October is a wash, I lived there. It's 36 and raining here. No problem.
Can we get back to the part about how I wish I were this sandwich?

That is a fine looking sandwich. Arugula looks fresh and presented on a very pleasant plate.

Mary Davies also trains in Houston. While I am sure if they had their choice, they would be off to Flagstaff or Boulder. But, summers in Houston are almost like being at altitude with the high dew points. I suspect that Becky will be off to join a group that is at altitude given her 2:30. It would be great to see her run Boston this spring and take it to the 2012 women's Olympic team.

Wow, so not only is she fast, she's perfected the art of time travel! 2012?!?
Is she being trained by Sean Wade or Jon Warren? Both coach in Houston with Jon Head Coach at Rice at Sean at a private school and private coaching? Just curious as both are great coaches to learn from...little tidbit as I don't think there have been too many US Marathoners break 4:00 in the mile and run 2:15 or faster in the marathon like Jon Warren...I can think of Greg Meyer...how about Paul Cummings too, I believe? Ken Martin???? Couldn't be too too many...very impressive but overall great person as well...Congrats to Becky and publicity for Rice too!!!

Is Steeple a track event? Because Becky tried last year but came up short in the Trials.
I don't think Roy (or anyone else) is suggesting that runners compete in the marathon while running track/xc in college. The track OTs were weeks after NCAAs last year (when Becky was still at Rice). Obviously she wasn't going to run the OT marathon off XC training right before her last college track season.
He's right that it makes a lot of sense for a runner at Becky's level to jump to marathon training after graduation. She was a great runner at Rice (multiple Track/XC AAs, 32:40) but she wasn't really going to be competitive with the top girls, at least not for a long time. Getting a jump on the marathon gives her the chance at making some money, winning some races (like CIM) and hopefully a long career building on experience and progression. Time will tell.
As far as I know, she's still coached by the Rice women's coach, Jim Bevan. Probably with plenty of input from Warren (men's coach).

Shalane has committed to Boston 2014. If healthy, it is safe to assume that Desi and Kara will also be invited as neither has a chance against the sub 2:20 field that typically lines up for London. Thus, the 2012 US women's team will more than likely be racing Boston.
Was that so hard?
Becky is being coached by probably one of the most underrated coaches in this country. Rice womens coach Jim Bevan. I am sure Jon has his input but Jim is more than capable. Sean no longer coaches in High School. His private coaching consists of his Kenyan Way program not much one on one.
I would like to know how she managed to travel around the world and run for a whole year. That strikes me as a little ridiculous.

Apparently she got a fellowship to pay for it

Not a whole lot of dummies at Rice.

Nice. If I knew about that, I certainly would have applied for it back in the day.
Becky is trained by Jim Bevan, the women's coach at Rice, and has input from Joe Vigil.
Say what you want about Houston, but the fact is that their are several very fast professional women who train their now.
Other than Becky you have..
Mary Davies, a New Zealender, has run 2:28 for the marathon and trains in Houston.
Jackie Areson who ran 15:12 for 5k and was a finalist at worlds last year.
Callie Wells who is another Rice grad who ran 4:14 for 1,500m.
I don't know if there are others. But between these 4 ladies, I think they've shown you can run world class times training in Houston.

The Watson Fellowship trustees seem EXTREMELY gullible. Kudos to her for conning them into a year-long running vacation. "Studying how running enhances fulfillment throughout the world".....really??????
At least the Rice girl this year had a "real" topic of study.
annnddd, you just displayed your douchery. Perhaps you should study up on the Watson Fellowship and understand its purpose, rather than being a complete douchebag.
