Try running 2:05 five times a year. It's not going to happen.
Why isn't that going to happen? If you are a 2:03 marathoner, then that should be easily possible.

Never understood why diehard fans of the sport on this site can't memorize Rodgers, not Rogers.
hahaha our best guys can't crack 2:10 once! just saying that instead of putting so much pressure on themselves to perform 1-2 times a year in 'do-or-die' situations, they should get out and race more to get some EXPERIENCE. doesn't have to be all marathons, plenty of 10 milers, HMs, etc. out there. Kawauchi has raced plenty at off distances in addition to his marathons this year. running is funny. i've had some of my best workouts & races in situations where i thought there was NO CHANCE i would perform well (in the middle of high mileage, coming off a break, etc.) you never now when you might pop a great race. but you'll never give yourself a chance to run a great one if you DON'T RACE!

Because if you are a 2:03 marathoner, you can earn a lot more money by running 2:03 twice than 2:05 five times per year.
If you want to see a runner run five 2:05 races in one year, change the scoring for WMM: total score from all WMM within a year, and 20-i points for ith place in a race. Or, more simply, most 2:05 races in a year on any course wins.
But that defeats the spirit of racing, because one win should be worth more than three eiths places - and to win a major marathon, you have to run very close to your maximum, which for a 2:03 guy means 2:03 on a good day, weather and course permitting.

Simply, not true. If they could they would because many of them are in it for the money.
