I think the skull looks really mean.

I really don't think this has anything at all to do with Halo. Galen, the star of NOP, especially at the inception of the logo, seems to goofy to make any sort of pop culture reference, especially a gaming one. He's the type of guy who would enjoy Coldplay.
If the logo was established around 2011, skulls were huge in fashion and art at the time. They have waxed and waned in popularity, but will always be a mainstay.
Damien Hirst (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_the_Love_of_God) got the jump on the current cycle, which is probably on its way out, but see also,

To suggest Halo as the source of inspiration is simply being naive to all the other iconography surrounding skull imagery.
My vote is for Olympic laurels (given the explicit goals of the formation of NOP) and skull, because skulls are cool/may bear some Day of the Dead Catholic significance for AlSal.
that was really a nice kit!
Setting aside the idea behind the logo, I find it to be a creepy image. It looks downright fascist.
You guys know Nike is the winged goddess of victory, right? The swoosh is supposed to represent a wing as well. They're not duck wings, they're wings representing Nike.

And I would guess the skull/wings combo represents death into life - out of defeat comes victory. It may well be a reference as people say to Alberto's heart attack, but also probably represents the idea that victory comes out of the struggle.
You sir win the Internet
Are you actually saying that gaming/Halo is too cool for a goofy guy like Galen? Halo was designed by/for goofy geeks who sit in front of a screen for hours playing video games... you realize that, right?
What I'm getting out of this thread is that if the logo actually means something, it's a secret, which would be pretty weird, like NOP is the Masons or some sort of group with secret symbols.
It also sounds like most people think the logo is creepy, which is also pretty weird from a marketing standpoint. It seems like from a marketing standpoint you would want a logo that was positive and appealing to people. Like if they just used the Olympic laurels (assuming they aren't duck wings or lobster claws), but when you add the skull you get too much of a creep factor.

It is not a laurel wreath. Those are duck wings. Oregon. Ducks.
They don't even train in Eugene, they really have no ties to U of O, maybe Oregon TC but not NOP.
NIKE = WINGS.
THEY ARE NOT DUCK WINGS.
SERIOUSLY.

That a bit of revisionist creativity.
I don't recall anyone ever saying that back in the day, nor can I find any reference from the designer or the Swoosh, nor from Phil Knight, who wasn't really happy with the Swoosh in the first place

I've always thought the black color and skull imagery was to let people know that they are evil. Not above doing shady stuff, having people whacked, whatever it takes to win.
