Right now, LV is far, far away from running even what he ran in high school, so talking about making any national team in running is a bit premature. However, he can do cross training--biking and swimming--until the cows come home, but if all he's doing is 50 mpw running, he has zero chance against unbelievably talented guys who are running more than twice as much. But he's the thing to ask: how many guys in history have trained as he wants to train and have been successful at the highest levels of long distance running? The answer is and will remain zero.

The 50 mpw and cross training bit doesn't help your argument.
He was good BECAUSE of the cross training. He stated that he preferred training that way and felt it made him a better athlete than just running alone.
Part of the reason he left Oregon is because he was forced to do only running and didn't like it.
