If you think that Tom Donnelly is the best D3 coach, then you are crazy. The number 1 spot goes to Al Carius

He had 19 national championships and won one in '95 with a perfect sweep. (I think) He had coached some 5:00 guys to all american status. Now has coached several Olympic/World Game medalists including Kastor and Martinez.
WOW! 19 national champs, John McDonld only had 42.
11 XC
12 outdoor track
19 indoor track
5 triples
He said Vigil should be considered. Didn't say he was better than McDonnell. Vigil did a lot with a lot less. Not saying Vigil is better, but he deserves to considered when debating the best all-time XC coaches.
I would add Damon Martin into any conversation of top college XC coaches. If I'm not mistaken, he's won 7 men's and 15 women's D2 titles.
By the way, the ASC perfect score was '92, not '95. Vigil's last XC season was '93. I believe he won 14 NAIA/D2 XC titles.

The Buffs with inferior talent won NCAAs again.

1) Ben Saarel - won Footlocker West in high school
2) Morgan Pearson - sub-9 two mile in high school, ran 14:03 at Duke last year
3) Blake Theroux - 4:14/9:13 in high school
4) Pierce Murphy - 9:14
5) Amar Moussa - 4th at NXN, two time California state champ, 8:51 two mile
6) Zach Perrin - 4:09/8:55
7) Connor Winter - 1:52/4:22/9:09; the first two were run on the same day when he swept the distance events at the Colorado state meet
Not running were: Adam Peterman: 8:57 for 3200, and Jake Hurysz, who was sixth at Footlocker.
Not exactly a bunch of scrubs.
LOL. Good info, Critical Thinking.
The OP's thought pattern is nonsense. On HS talent, this team SHOULD be doing well. Anything less would show BAD coaching.

I think the guys at Portland are better. The fact they don't have a track, big name school or name says a lot. And they constantly beat many "Top" schools.
Well done by the Buffs though. Did they listen to letsrun's advice from that interview?

They are D1, but not considered a very good school, and have many athletes that are dumb as a doornail.
Wetmore is the champ. Olympians since 2000 in the distance events from the 1500 to the marathon. 19
Arkansas 6

You are right, Vigil was a great coach and did do a lot with less money and with a harder time recuting top talent. He should be considered.
Not 19 National Championships.
19 Olympians in the 1500, 5k, 10k, Steeple, Marathon since 2000.
Arkansas only has 6 Olympians

sub 9 that's D1 G
There were 2 HS boys who broke 9:00 in the rarely contested 2 mile last year; 36 for 3200. Either way, by your logic, that leaves less than 40 "D1" runners by your definition. You're not real bright are you?
Tough for McDonnell to pad his stats since he's been retired for a few years. Are you going to consider his athletes in non-distance events as well, like Spearman and Gay (he didn't test positive for anything with McDonnell)? Let's include the 90's as well, and I think that the totals will look very different.
The plot thickens...

Their ability to live and train at altitude is effectively a PED. They should win every year.
Won't quite say every year. But agree with the post.
You guys do realize that Wetmore is a complete whackjob who before going to Colorado bullshitted his time in New Jersey
