Is there a rule that says only amateurs can run Footlocker? Not that she ever would.

Any idea where else she applied?
When do kids find out who accepted them?
No, I just saw a quote from her that she's applied to Portland.

Ivy is fine for dorks holed up in robotics labs for months on end. But not for runners.
She had said that she's applied to Portland.
Interesting. I guess they are all in on the running. No holds barred. Not that UP isnt a good school, its fine (and Catholic). I just, like many, figured she would be an education snob.
English bro. Learn it, use it, love it.
I agree and Alan Webb and Galen Rupp would validate the opinion that going pro early is not worth losing the total college experience and the racing and the team camaraderie, money aside. She may make more total money now and she went with the sure thing. But Bernard Lagat, Nourredine Morceli, and Galen Rupp did very well financially after NCAA competition. In addition, she's cheating herself of a great education if she decides to go to a place like Portland after coming out of Bronxville with straight A's. Stanford or Harvard seems a better fit.
but she is really not cute
someone said on these boards that Cain could go to Columbia for cheap or nothing b/c of her dad's job.

How did Allyson Felix make out?

Smart people can succeed anywhere.

Too bad. Would have been nice to root for her. Now, with sleazy sal's syringe squad she'll always be beyond suspect.
Hmm , probably not , she is still at risk , young , burnout rate for young women stars is very high. She's is in the best situation with the best support team in the world. Other groups don't have what she needs.
Lets hope she does not become another Webb. Simms ( her agent ) does not have the power that Flynn had over Webb and raced him into oblivion.

Granted, she didn't run any record times after nationals so it may be a mute issue.
moot

Why does Webb validate it? I mean maybe it was just the program he was in but he didn't exactly thrive in the NCAA.
She's quoted in Running Times: "As of now, the goal is definitely to go to college in Portland. I have applied to the University of Portland." http://www.runnersworld.com/elite-runners/mary-cain-going-pro-makes-the-most-sense-for-me?cm_mmc=Facebook-_-RunningTimes-_-Content-Racing-_-MaryCainTurnsPro
Alan Webb and Galen Webb weren't World Championship finalists in high school.
They were still pushed by college competition when they got there.
Morceli never ran NCAA competition. He was at Riverside, CA community college and went pro and #1 right away.
Lagat wasn't good until late in college.
The best example of a high school great running in college was Jim Ryun.
And there was no pro running then.

Myself, and a few others, predicted this exact scenario over the last several months...that she would, in fact, enroll at Portland and turn pro with Nike. We were pooh poohed by so many that said "No way. She'll go to an Ivy, or Stanford, etc" or "No way. She'll go to Oregon."
Doesn't it seem so obvious now? This was really the only option, and was quite easy to predict in actuality.

yeh - I am one of those who predicted the opposite. She is going 100% all in on this running thing - I thought she would hedge her bets a little.
Good on 'er - this should be interesting.
Just for the record, this probably does make the University of Portland Cain certified. But does it make the Portland Pilots Cain certified? I would say not since she won't run for them.
I really don't think this is a good idea. Look what happened to Webb after going pro in college.
I think she should just enjoy being a collegiate runner. Those are four years of her life she'll never be able to have. And she has the rest of her life to go pro.
And it's not like she wouldn't have any competition in the NCAA. Sure, she might find better competition in the pro world, but she sure as hell wouldn't be alone in a college race.
It's a shame that she's rushing into being a pro. I hope it all works out for her. I hope she never regrets not having a normal childhood experience, but I think she will.

I think a chance for a college experience is something special. Friends and experiences for life. I know I'll take a beating from some. But, she would become a more than a phenom while at University of Oregon.
I get that she can still go to college with the money she makes, etc etc. But, I really think she would have had a great time, even if it was just one year.
Go ahead, reply with vengance.
Why do people act like going to college is the only way to get friends and experiences for life?
