The world can always use more inspiring walk-on stories. Even if Van Voorhis sounds as though he was just a late bloomer - rather than a less-talented dude who forged himself into a stud.
Cool, Mike. Now get ready for Friday's race.
I was surprised he had to deal with a level of jealousy from his teammates. Glad he persevered.
Great article on Van Voorhis, but Byrne sounds like a real tool. It's one thing for a coach to set the bar high, assign challenges and be demanding, but Byrne comes off like he's trying to be the Bobby Knight of cross country.
That crack about lollipops and Little League was completely condescending, especially since Byrne had misled Van Voorhis regarding what he needed to do as a prospective walk-on. "Yeah, sure, run a season with the WTC and then come back and see me. Oh...you really came back? Sorry kid, you're too late." Lying b--tard.
Well, Byrne went to Alvarez and got the slot open for him. Is he bad because he had not expected him to make the team and had not seen him when he sent the rooster in earlier.
Yeah, sounds like a tool. You know if there's one thing you dont want on your team is some guy that busts his tail every day.
The article also indicated that he went to the same high school as my mom (almost three-fourths of a century later).
bump for the 2nd place finisher at big tens today.
Did he even train in high school? I know he ran around 9:40 but he must have done that on a year or two of 25 mile weeks.
The fact that he had the cojones to go the head coach and ask to walk on the team means he was already willing to work hard and never be a problem. But Mick was right to test him by running for the club team first.
Real talent is hard to judge. Obviously Michael is a rare case.
I recall years back when Dellinger was coaching at Oregon and a 9:15 runners would be to let to walk on but none of them ever panned out.
Dan Nelson was about a 9:15 3000 meter runner and he did just fine. You are clueless.
Byrne most definitely sounds like a tool. I read an article after their season opener and he said something along the lines of, "the upperclassmen held their hands around the course" when referring to the freshman.
Seems condescending for no good reason.
Also, 940 might not be so great, but the 423 seems decent. I understand HSers have gotten faster than when I was that age (ugh, the early 90s), but 423/940 guys shouldn't be overlooked.
seems to me Byrne doesn't like his handpicked nancys to get upstaged.
