I've been making my own orthotics for 15 years. Cost is about 20 cents. I've described the process here many times.
Is there a shoe or shoe type best suited for these inside the shoe modifications?
Not really. You need to be able to remove the existing insert, but I've found that even the ones that are glued in can be removed if you work at it very carefully.
When I first started making my own orthotics, I'd make the first attempt, put on the shoes, and run in them for 100m or so. If I felt a hot spot where there was too much or too little support. I'd stop, remove the shoe, and add another piece of felt, remove a piece, or move a piece to a slightly different location. I carried little pieces of pre-cut crafts felt with me and coaches tape to apply it.
At first, I was surprised that my left and right foot never matched, but I've since learned that this is common. One foot will often need more support than the other.
I also learned that I couldn't make the perfect inserts for one pair of shoes and then swap them to another pair of shoes. Each set of inserts will need to be custom made for each new pair of shoes. However, once you've done it a few times, making a new pair of orthotics only takes a few minutes... far less time than going to a store and getting fitted for a $300 pair of orthotics.
In the past, I'd buy a shoe that fit so poorly, I'd have to start with a Superfeet Green or Black and modify it, but now that I've gotten more experience doing this, I can usually avoid having to use a Superfeet insert.
