haha thanks cant wait to calculate after this weekend. Harvard men a nipping on princeton's heels
Cornell came to Ithaca College for the "Quad" meet on IC's flat track. Not a lot of performances that might interest Ivy fans--I understand that CU's "studs" were mostly at BU and the Armory. Results are here:
http://www.tfrrs.org/results/31609.html
On the women's side, big news was Rachel Sorna's season debut. She looked easy and lapped the field--twice--en route to winning the 3,000 at just under 9:50. For the men, Weston Northrop jumped 7.05m/23-1 3/4, making him Cornell's sixth guy over seven meters this season.
The weekend had so many list-changing performances that, contrary to my usual biweekly pattern, I just had to post an update to last week's snapshot of the tfrrs lists (which are here:
http://www.tfrrs.org/lists/1150.html
).
This is not a prediction, but just a look at where the events list stands now. (The best recent predictions have come from fun., who looks at several seasons' worth of personal bests--looks like we'll be getting another one of those soon.) I believe I got the math and events right; if not, they're close.
I didn't allow for undoable doubles, or people who might have gotten injured (it now looks like there've been a couple of key injuries) or left the team, or the over-generous conversions that people get for their flat-track times; I just looked at the top six marks on the tfrrs site.
MEN
Individual track Harvard 60, Princeton 53, Cornell 43, Brown 35, Columbia 34, Dartmouth 26, Yale 16, Penn 12
Individual field Cornell 100, Princeton 32, Harvard 31, Penn and Yale 8, Dartmouth 3, Columbia 2, Brown 1
Combined "scoring" including all the above: Cornell 143, Princeton 93, Harvard 86, Brown and Columbia 36, Dartmouth 27, Penn 22, Yale 21
Heptathlon Brown 16, Cornell 10, Princeton 5
Combined "scoring" including everything but the relays: Cornell 153, Princeton 98, Harvard 86, Brown 52, Columbia 36, Dartmouth 27, Penn 22, Yale 21
Relays Princeton and Dartmouth 18, Yale and Cornell 16, Columbia 11, Brown 6, Penn 4, Harvard 3
Total "scores": Cornell 169, Princeton 116, Harvard 89, Brown 58, Columbia 47, Dartmouth 45, Yale 37, Penn 26
Quick notes
Princeton is obviously coming up fast. On the track (solo races plus relays) they have the best coverage of events and highest score. In the field, only Cornell surpasses the Tigers' coverage of events/score; but it surpasses Princeton by a lot there. Harvard projects (now) as a worthy member of a Big Three, which would represent a real change from recent Heps' "dual meet" structure.
The Big Red don't have a top-six mark at present in any individual race longer than 500m, but this could actually work a bit to their advantage: they can concede the middle-distance and distance races; cheer like crazy for Brown and Columbia and Dartmouth--well, anybody but Princeton and Harvard--in those events; and have guys running fresh legs in the longer relays. Personally, I think the meet will not be decided before the relays--again.
Under current projections, Cornell doesn't have to have a perfect meet in the field events; as long as they hit, say, three-quarters of their scoring potential there, they'll be very difficult to beat.
I got a chance to see Columbia/Cornell/Harvard in action at the Armory this weekend; that was a mixed bag (partial squads, etc.). The fields in the throws were excellent, but the facility was not as good: the ring was pretty slick, and the officials did not permit any "grooming" of it by the throwers.
[A Western college flew two SPers a couple of thousand miles to the meet. They'd had marks in the low 60s--feet, that is--this season; at the Armory they threw in the low 50s. Their coach was rawther perturbed, to put it mildly.]
Mozia did well in the shot (below his season's best, but a good "comeback" winning throw in the finals), but was well off his recent PR in the weight. Cornell's Rhodes competed well there, though, and Winkler improved from his previous meet in December (the Big Red now has three WTers over 61ft!); Harvard's throwers also had some good, some bad, and some meh.
WOMEN (fractional scores rounded down)
Individual track Harvard 76, Cornell 52, Dartmouth 48, Columbia 42, Princeton 12, Brown 9, Yale 6, Penn 0
Individual field Harvard and Columbia 36, Cornell 28, Princeton 26, Dartmouth 20, Brown 17, Yale 14, Penn 6
Combined "scoring" including all the above: Harvard 113, Cornell 81, Columbia 78, Dartmouth 68, Princeton 38, Brown 26, Yale 20, Penn 6
Pentathlon Dartmouth 10, Cornell 8, Princeton 7, Harvard 6
Combined "scoring" including everything but the relays: Harvard 119, Cornell 89, Columbia and Dartmouth 78, Princeton 45, Brown 26, Yale 20, Penn 6
Relays Columbia and Cornell 14, Harvard 11, Dartmouth 10, Princeton 6, Penn 4, Yale 3, Brown 0
Total "scores": Harvard 130, Cornell 102, Columbia 92, Dartmouth 88, Princeton 51, Brown 26, Yale 23, Penn 10
Quick notes
The 5,000m and 4x8 lists for the women--after the first couple marks, anyway--don't indicate much. The SPIRE meet is coming up: that may produce some good times, but--as we saw last year--they shouldn't necessarily be given too much weight. By the way: is Neer going to be running for Columbia? She could make a major difference...
Cornell's women have the best event coverage at present, but that's no guarantee: a few years ago, the Big Red actually scored in every event (I've never heard of another Heps team doing that), and didn't finish in the top two! It is surprising to see the Big Red women projecting zero in the throws, where their men are doing very well.
It looks like the linchpin for the Harvard women is the hurdles, where the Cantabs currently project 24 1/2 points. If that goes as they hope, Harvard (which is *not* projecting a lot of points in the hotly-contested distance races...and therefore can't lose many there!) will be extremely tough to beat.
BOTTOM LINE
The Cornell men (slight) and Harvard women (solid) now rate as favorites to repeat.
About that time...
Men’s shot put: Just like the last few years, Mozia of Cornell is the hands-down favorite. That being said, he has yet to walk away with an indoor title. Always the bridesmaid as it were… however, the chance to see a world-ranked thrower is something no one should ever pass up!! As always, the duo of Brode and Glauser look at 2 & 3 fairly handily. If anyone can challenge Mozia, it would be one of them. Bell of Princeton showing a great Freshman year so far with a super solid mark right over 17m, with his teammate Rushton right behind. Princeton will look to pick up some much missed points in the throws this year. Liokumovich of Harvard is not far behind, and he is very capable of throwing 17m, so he could knock down the Princeton duo if he has a good day, putting some more Crimson on the podium. From there, we have a whole slew of mid to low 16 meter throwers who could be in contention if they have a good day, and someone else does not. One of the greatest things about the current Men’s shot field is that there is 1 senior in the top ten, 2 in the top 20.
Women’s shot put: Harvard’s frosh Okwelogu comes out swinging! She is definitely my favorite for this one. She is not throwing quite as far as she did in high school, but adjustments and changes are always to be expected. I could definitely see her hitting 50, and she could easily be a major power to be reckoned with over the next few years. Buhr of Brown and Berg of Dartmouth are not far behind, both very capable of an upset over Okwelogu. Will their veteran experience help them with Heps jitters that might otherwise unnerve the Harvard frosh? Sophomore Wison from Yale will look to improve on her performance from last year, looking consistent at just under 14m. Harvard’s Alysha Johnson comes out of nowhere (has not competed since 2011) and will look to pick up some more points for what is most likely the favored women’s team indoors. As usual, we see a grouping of ladies right around 13 meters that will round out that last spot at Heps. A few names missing or lower on the list then I would have expected: Picciallo of Penn only 12.14m, Darpolar of Brown has not thrown the shot yet (but has thrown the weight well). Women’s shot is another field that is quite young. There are 3 seniors in the top 10, but 14 of the top 20 are underclassmen.
Men’s Weight: Cornell showing some depth here, with Harvard right in the mix. Look for nothing but Crimson or Red on the podium in this event. While Servino of Dartmouth and Dickerson of Columbia are both capable of throwing over 18m, everyone else has been very consistent this year and it will be very tough to crack the top 6. Rhodes of Cornell steadily improving with a mark further then the winning mark from last year, along with a solid year for Mozia should net Cornell a good amount of points. Winkler of Cornell, while putting up solid marks for a freshman, has not had the transition most would expect from someone with the HS marks he had. His freshman counterpart at Harvard, Whitener, looks to be in about the same boat as Winkler, good but not blowing my skirt up. Probably adjusting to a new coach, school, environment, etc, is all playing havoc on these young men’s performances. Look for either of these two to break wide open at Heps and steal the win. Glauser of Harvard, last year’s decisive champion, is off to a slow start in comparison to his final mark last year, but could easily threaten to defend his title. One of the most competitive fields at Heps this year in my opinion, and should be a VERY fun one to watch.
Women’s Weight: Another shootout between Ekechukwu of Harvard and Ratcliffe of Princeton, with Ekechukwu being the favorite. Ratcliffe is consistent at 19.50, but has not been able to put together the rest of the steps needs to move forward in the weight, as opposed to Ekechukwu who has greatly improved over the past few years. My money is on Ekechukwu, who will be looking to joint some of her fellow Ivy Leaguers at NCAA Indoor Nationals again. Darpolor of Brown looking solid in the weight while being absent in the shot out so far. DuPont of Harvard will look to add more points to her team here as well, rounding out the final few spots along with Wilson of Yale and Buhr of Brown. Many ladies below 16 meters, but I would expect at least 16 for placing this year.
Wow, the all-star commentators are starting to weigh in--great stuff! Always a pleasure to hear from shazzuy, fun., et al.
Great to see more faces appearing, now that Heps is 3 weeks away.
It's interesting how Sorna was slated to race at BU but raced at Ithaca instead. And still no sign of Weer.
But honestly, big congratulations to Michael Williams of Princeton! He ran a 3:59 mile on Saturday, surprising the crowed and himself. He's always been a reliable relay leg and he does not have much individual credit to his name while in college (he has earned All-Ivy in 4x800 and in the 2012 outdoor 800), but man, what a treat for his senior year!
And speaking of the 800m, from what I can see, the top 10-ish in the men's 800 has completely changed due to this weekend.

The middle distance races on the men's side are shaping up to be show-stoppers! 12 guys in the 800 under 1:53 (plus a few more with PRs in there), and 10 under 4:05! It will be interesting to see where everyone ends up.

I agree - but I fear that these events will continue to follow the "sit-and-kick"/strategic method come Heps. Last year, the men's mile was about only 10 to 13 seconds faster than the women's mile! Granted, it was another record breaking event for Abbey, but if I remember correctly, the top 5 women mile times broke the previous Heps mile record last year.
Mile run — 1. Peter Callahan (Princeton), 4:19.90; 2. Nick Wade (Cornell), 4:20.81; 3. Will Geoghegan (Dartmouth), 4:22.03; 4. Michael Palmisano (Princeton), 4:22.08; 5. Erik Berg (Brown), 4:22.10; 6. John Gregorek (Columbia), 4:22.16.
Mile run — 1. Abbey D’Agostino (Dartmouth), 4:32.42; 2. Erin Gillingham (Columbia), 4:40.72; 3. Emily Shearer (Cornell), 4:41.02; 4. Greta Feldman (Princeton), 4:41.62; 5. Lindsay Walsh (Dartmouth), 4:43.41; 6. Alexis Mikaelian (Princeton), 4:43.65.

No doubt there is a strong likelihood this is the case again. However, if I'm Willig, Shirvell, or one of the guys on a team with no real hope for a title, I take the race out from the gun and make it honest. Still, I wouldn't put money on any fast times, just fast kicks.
2014 HEPS VIRTUAL ANALYSIS
FEB 10th (2 weekends away)
Things to remember this is not a prediction yet, because we don't know who will run what events and if everyone is healthy.
Just a good overview to keep in perspective previous year's marks for those who are waiting to peak at conferences.

- JR Rutger Admirand (Cornell)

- SR John Schilkowsky (Cornell)
To fun.: thanks! FYI, John Spooney is not on the Brown roster and I believe we've had confirmation that he is not doing track this year; I believe Rutger Admirand is not in school this year (roster needs an update!), and in any case is not on the team.
Ivyguy thanks for the info on Spooney and Rutger!
Here are the adjustments (I also made a mistake by not including Hopkins' 400 mark)

Great stuff, fun., and much obliged. Your tally of the 7-10 guys I find extremely interesting, and I note that Penn has nine such. After their understandable setback earlier in the season, they seem to be coming up quickly and I believe they'll surprise at Heps, just as they did in cross. *I* shall be surprised if they finish 8th.
Similarly, Princeton has a ton of men lurking in those 7-10 spots. (I'd usually expect Cornell, with its depth, to lead in that category.) I'm not prepared to call the Tigers anything less than co-favorites, at this point, and I can't imagine the meet's being decided before the relays.
I've gotten intimations of some significant injuries, on both the men's and women's sides, but have been unable to confirm most and so won't repeat them here. Coaches are playing their injury/illness cards *very* close to their vest this year--I haven't even been able to get anything (semi-)official re my hometown Lions! (I agree, however, that Columbia's women are the greatest threat to a Harvard repeat.)
Anyway, thanks again for all your work--and I hope everyone understands that you're not predicting (yet)!
One thing I noticed is Cornell is looking VERY good vs Princeton in the 400s/500s meaning...
A) Cornell is going to be able to spread their points out in both events
B) Princeton is limited to just 2 scorers total in both events combined.
C) Cornell's 4x4 has much more depth
D) Could be the deciding factor.

I agree that it could make the difference, but BRH might be restricted to just the 60 and 4x4 (the 400/500 finals come before--just before--the 60 final), and Hairston might do only the 60H and 4x4, though at least the hurdles final comes before the 400/500 on day 2, according to this:
http://www.ivyleaguesports.com/championships/track-ind/2013-14/Schedule_of_Events.pdfI believe Cornell will be at SPIRE this coming weekend, but most of their crew will be coming to Ithaca College for a meet.
SPIRE is where Nick Wade ran 3:59.998 last year, IIRC. Probably good for seed times--not sure it's a reliable indicator of the runners' actual abilities compared to the rest of the Ivy League, though.
We'll also have HYP, which can show us a little more on the Harvard-Princeton matchup.
I agree that I do not feel Cornell would have Bruno do both the 60 and 400, considering how he has yet to do an open 400 this indoor season. I think we talked about this before in this thread, as last year, Spooney was the only one who did the double (and he looked dead in the 400m final as a result).
I wonder if Yale will force Marc Andre Alexander (frosh) to do both since they would be in dire need of points and he is their top sprinter in both events. He's been running more 400s and 4x400s in recent weeks at the big-scale meets, but perhaps he could attempt the double this weekend at his home track at HYP...
Korolev and Geoghegan's 3k from this past weekend is available for free viewing on Flotrack. It really came down to the last 400 meters...
I see that htc (
) has Cornell listed at SPIRE this weekend. They're definitely sending people there but the bulk of their group is coming to Ithaca College for our meet on Saturday. Actually some of their top folks will be at IC.
Just an FYI.
Cornell's schedule does not depict anything going on at Ithaca College for this weekend.
But hey. athletic website schedule have been wrong before.
