2 million spectators!!!??? Ha. the 1 million number they used to proudly throw around was ridiculous. so i guess they just decided that another 1 million people would come out and watch?
26.2 x 5280 = 138,336 feet of running in the marathon
1 million / 138, 336 = 7.2 spectators per foot of course
2 million = 14.2 spectators per foot of course
The numbers only increase if you toss out the first 2 miles of the course because there are no spectators on the bridge.
Who do they think actually believes this garbage?
Actually, there will be maybe 22 miles of course where spectators are allowed, subtracting the bridges and a bit more. Then it would be 17 people per foot for 2 million spectators. However, you are not counting both sides of the course. So, it is about 8.5 people per foot of course. Now that's obviously ridiculous. There are stretches of the course where there aren't many people out, such as the orthodox Jewish section of East Williamsburg, where people are completely indifferent to the race, and parts of Queens in Greenpoint and parts of Harlem and the Bronx. Some stretches of the course have multiple people packed together and multiple rows. In those miles, getting back into Manhattan for maybe 35 blocks, But where you have the potential for a lot more spectators is in the buildings surrounding the course, without there being a visibly high density of spectators. What that # is, I have no idea.
