Unfortunately cross country seems to be on the decline with elites generally. What's required is a big star who decides to make it a priority. Think Davis Cup and tennis until McEnroe came along and decided to make it a priority.

Salazar does not seem to have any appreciation for cross country. Rupp has rarely run cross as a pro and I'm not sure whether he has ever run world xc. Cain should absolutely be running in what will go down in history as the best girls' field ever with Baxter, Efraimson, and Cranny. And Cain should run worlds when they decide to have it (the Europeans pouting that they always lose).
Salzie has his faults, and he is vastly overrated as a mid-d coach. Yes, Cain would add drama to a very fine field in the NXN, should it consist of Baxter, Cranny and Efraimson. But here, at least, Alberto is right. It is not part of his mandate to please x/c fans. Cain (and Baxter) were lucky to not get hurt last year. Just because three h.s. x/c greats are running does not mean Mary Cain should be in there.
If Salazar does not "appreciate" x/c so what? If he feels Cain gains something by running x/c hills there is always VCP where Cain can work out -- and VCP is one of the great x/c venues. Portland is nothing. She does not have to go there for its haystacks. About all I can say for Portland is it has damned good beer.
What we have are a bunch of crybabies on LRC who ran x/c, and now there dear love gets no respect.
The best article on a Cain/Baxter rematch was written by Bill Meylan in August.
