So incredibly disappointing... Is there any precedent for this? Even if he's back racing next spring, has any marathoner ever skipped out on 2yrs of racing and shown back up with a great time on their first race back?

As the BroJos have already noted. Martin Lel's first race back was a pretty seller performance in London. I think he was second against an absolutely stacked field.
Overtraining injury? How is this even an excuse for someone who has made running their living for almost a decade. Hall should know his body and limitations so well by this stage in his career that a mistake like this should never happen. Ryan hall I'm a fan but geez race once in a while man. Cot damn!

So he hasn't completed a race in 2 years, and his hip is aggravated, so he quits?
Imagine that in another sport. He'd be ridiculed. Check that, he would no longer be part of any other professional sport, because he hasn't done anything in two years, so it wouldn't even be known that in his "zealous efforts to have redemption" he got "injured" training to get back into the sport.
Running is messed up, and embarrassing.
So you expect him to run 26.2 miles on an injured hip? If you are a runner you know how stupid that would be. A basketball player can push through because he would be out there at a max of 48 minutes not including Time outs and halftime. If hall ran he would further injure his hip and probably hurt other muscles compensating for the hip and probably never be able to put together a solid marathon again.
He did the right thing by dnsing. But for the love of God, get a coach Ryan. What makes him think that God will only tell him how to run through direct communication? He obviously used other coaches to guide him in the past, and it's clear that this faith based coaching is really another way of saying hall thinks he knows more than everyone and can do it on his own. That prideful attitude has killed hall and brought him this low. Unfortunately he still doesn't see it, and until he gets over himself he'll never get back to where he was.
I wonder if this has anything to do with out of competition testers catching up with him at some point in the recent future? If the times are slow at NYC like they were at Boston this year, maybe some of the majors have been sucessful at limiting the number of cheats from entering.
I would never wish injuries upon any runner. Better to see the best competition possible. Perhaps Ryan is trying to train to be a 2:05 guy when he is more of a 2:10 guy these days. Don't know. Other than he keeps going over the edge in training.
Go Jason Hartman!! My pick for top American even before Hall pulled out. Jason had a good tune-up recently pacing at Chicago.

bekele's comeback, although incomplete, is probably the closest analogy I can think of
If God is coaching him, why is he perpetually injured and not able to compete? God does not care how he runs and he needs to figure that out and get a real coach. Hall is not a big part of God's plan. Hall has talent but he is a total head case.
interesting, the lance documentary was all about filming his comeback.
it switched to documenting his lies.
the hall documentary is not over yet. . .
curious to see which path this takes.
I hope he is not done, but the truth is that these top guys only have 8-10 fast marathons at most in them and then they either get injured or decline rapidly.
I know there are exceptions, but for the most part 4-5 years at two marathons per year takes its toll.
Hall has to get healthy if he can (big if) and then rebuild, especially his leg speed....like he had when he ran sub 13:20, he already has the endurance.
Nothing to be sad about, he ran a legit 2:06, that is very fast for a non East African.

Yea, I mean who ever heard of 30+ year old athletes getting the injury bug?
I TOLD YA'LL THIS WOULD HAPPEN. ANYONE WHO IS SURPRISED IS A COMPLETE MORON JUST LIKE THE RELIGIOUS NUTJOB HALL HIMSELF. LOLOLOLOL
Ryan is in real trouble because of Ray Flynn. Priority one should be creating a situation for Ryan that allows him to get healthy. Ryan is crying for help and doesn't have a coach or a training group. Heading over to Kenya without someone overseeing him on a daily basis is/was useless. Signing Ryan to a large contract with Boston and New York could be done by a trained chimp. Ryan needs some honest management right now or his career is over.

There's always hope- but get a coach Ryan.
