What are we supposed to think next spring (or sooner) when Boston says he's coming? Can they do that with a straight face?

I knew this was coming but still.
I just want to see him race already.
He's trying to be a coach + athlete + philanthropist, and it's stretching him too thin. He really just needs to pick up a coach and try to salvage the rest of his career.
I train and then race my marathons at 6:35-6:40 pace. With my background and at my current fitness level, if I trained for 6:25-or-faster then I would without doubt not be able to start the race because of injuries/fatigue/etc. I think that's what is going on here. There has to be an underlining cause. Ryan thinks he's a 2:04 runner and training like such over and over again must be the reason of so many of these issues, that's my only explanation anyway.
I just wish he would get a real coach and stop publicizing his races so much beforehand. It's just getting crazy and much harder to support him. In saying that, though, I do like Ryan and wish him the best. These are just my opinions/thoughts.
This really is a bummer. I have been a Hall fan and defender for several years now, but I have to agree...I think his career is over. Good for him that he's been able to keep Asics along for the ride for this long, but I have a feeling that that might be coming to an end if he doesn't get to a start line...soon. I find it really upsetting that there are very high caliber runners out there that can't get a solid contract, but Hall has drug Asics along all these years without a race result to show.
After setting an AR of 2:04:58 in Boston 2011, he's now out to set the world record of consecutive marathon DNS's.
Anthony
I can empathize with the guy. It has now been 2 years since I've been able to run a marathon. I was just getting back into half decent shape and am out again with a broken bone in my foot. These days it seems like I am getting injured when I think about running a marathon. I couldn't imagine what it would be like if I was a professional and dependent on racing as my income.
Great points , spot on.
If this poor guy would just slow down , drop the ego and let a coach guide him we may see once again that flash of brilliance he has. If not and he stays self coached we have seen the best of him. Time is running out on Ryan.

Great feats require risk. I've yet to find a runner that can continually podium at the highest level and never get injured in the process
This is not surprising, but still disappointing.
Update: LRC story here:

There's a difference between the occasional little problem and never racing!
Haile has raced consistently at the very highest level for more than 20 years, of course he's had the odd injury here and there, but he still races several times every year.

He did the workouts for a while that Renato gave him and he got injured.
Next suggestion
He needs to talk to Meb and see how he can succeed again and again.

Right on.
The right approach would be to take the next 4 weeks off and then focus on some smaller events, but racing them. E.g. the NYC Half and then go from there.
But we all know what Hall will do instead. He will announce in a couple of weeks that his next race will be Boston. 100% guaranteed.
Ugh. Pathetic. Train at 70% effort once you are 100% healthy , run a race a few months from now, even if you just treat it like a tempo run. Right now you need more than a rust-buster Ryan, you need to be present and relevant!

Of the "big 3" from FL in 2000, Ritz still reigns supreme. Hall and Webb are done.
"Supreme" is a big word to hang on Ritz. Among American-born runners, Webb is the alltime best 1500m/mile guy; Rupp is the alltime best 5000/10000m guy; and Hall is the alltime best 1/2 marathon / marathon guy. What does that leave for Ritz? Alltime slowest 200m PR of any sub 13 5000m guy?

Haha you're joking right? Anything he does gets him injured.

He has a great coach. God.

There is a reason that you picked out Haile. It is because he is the exception, not the rule.
Why don't you take a look at all of the Kenyan and Ethiopian champions at the marathon, half marathon and 10000 over those same 20 years and see what percentage of them have raced at the highest level, relatively injury free for ten years or more. That would be more relevant (but not quite as cute as your quote).
He probably got injured while praying, must have been on his knees to long, got an imbalance and it affected his hip....
