Heck, I'd settle for a single squadron at this point.

This is what confuses me. Why all of a sudden are there like seemingly dozens of guys who could get close to or smash the times that Geb and Tergat ran? It just seems strange that suddenly a bunch of guys are destroying all of Africa's previous greats. Like no names are running 2:05. I know people keep saying its because they skip the track but it still seems strange...
It's more like distance running is basically dead as a professional sport, and there's no place in track for these guys. Renato has written in the past about the Kenyan youngsters not being able to get into track races ("because of lack of interest") and being forced into road racing due to no other options. It's become quite difficult for East Africans to break into pro track in Europe because nobody cares and nobody wants them. And some of the Kenyans have started to worry that the same thing is going to happen in the marathon. People want to see Bolt. They don't care at all for some nameless Africans.
I don't think any real athletes care much about marathons except as a source of income. They care about medals.

Well said! Leave civilization with its pesky dope testers- disappear into the bush for a few years, train and dope and then disappear! Easy route to sub 2:05. Can't blame them for it- best way to avoid poverty.
The other thing is that there is no new talent coming to the marathon in the US. As bad as Ritz ran he will most likely end the year as the fastest US marathoner. Hall and Meb could run faster. Maybe Vail too.

I'll say! They've got entire regiments doing this! What hope have we got?
