Need a recommendation on backpack

Followup: I haven't flown in four years. I don't recall seeing many tactical backpacks, except on GIs, back then. Do college kids and normal travelers wear tactical-looking backpacks now. Like I said, I don't want to stand out too much.

If you are concerned about a tactical backpack, look at a sports discounter for backpacking equipment. Big 5 comes to mind, but I don't know how widespread they are.

I think I paid around $40 for something that has lasted me 6 years and I don't want to think about how many miles. It isn't the biggest, but it serves its purpose.

I second the idea of a backpacking pack. Most are small enough to carry on, although not when packed to capacity. Basically the rigid part of the pack (the frame / back plate) will meet the max length requirement, and you just fold down the soft fabric part of the pack that would normally extend above the frame.

These packs are specifically designed to carry decent loads over great distances on foot, so they'll definitely be more of a joy to carry than some crappy "tactical" backpack. You'll generally sacrifice some durability, weight, or comfort with a cheap pack like the Hi-Tec, but if this is just for general travel and not actual trekking, the cheap route is probably the best one.

If you only have $100, you might try ebay or craigslist to find a decent used pack - look for 70 liters or so if you will be out on a trip without resupply for a week+
