It's very applicable. In 1912, the 5000m WR was 14:36 and marathon world record was 2:40:34. Even by 1950, the 5000m WR was 13:58 and marathon WR was 2:25:39. For the entire first half of the 20th century, there wasn't a single remotely world class marathoner by your standards. So I'll ask again, what do you think of those guys who were running?
