This is the problem with combining serious racers with a parade atmosphere. You give awards, time people and create an air of competitiveness and then humiliate someone for being competitive.
There's a reason only a couple stills have been posted. The video would show her pretty much motionless as he approached. He had no reason to give space since she wasn't moving. When he was almost right next to her, she inexplicably walked backwards, how could he have anticipated her to go backwards, and ran into him. He threw an arm up and tried to avoid a head on collision which would have turned out much worse for both of them.
100% her fault and she's lucky she didn't get hurt worse. A half second later and she would have been directly in front of him. He would have run into her full steam and come down on top of her. (Of course then people here and on that idiot blog would want him prosecuted for attempted rape.)
She has taken the "high road" by insulting him with names such as ahole, narcissist, and I'm not even going to bother checking the rest. What's the "low road" for her, taking out a hit on him?
But this is what happens when people think they're in a parade and all those reckless maniacs come barreling through actually caring about their time and place. Same thing happens in running. (Only USATF would never sanction a race that let this happen nor DQ the actual victim in the incident.)
One thing is for sure, I'll never do another USATriathlon event. Not that they'll miss me but if the pervading attitude of the federation is to 1) not protect its participants and 2) punish those that protect themselves, I'll stick with neighborhood tris tat don't bother with the sanction and actually protect their competitors.
In case you're wondering, I have nothing to do with this situation. I live thousands of miles away and haven't done a tri in over 10 years. I have been hurt by people who wander into a path (or their dogs, or their kids) with no respect for another person who might also be there. If this were a traffic accident, which it really is, her insurance would go up by 3-4x after this and he would have a settlement.
