Hi! I'm currently a senior at a Big10 school with a kinesiology major and I wanna pursue a career in collegiate coaching (sprints & hurdles). I plan on going on to do my masters in sports psych. Does anyone have any tips on what steps I should take to get a graduate coaching assistantship, hopefully with funding? I know football and basketball teams have them, but do track teams?
So far I have a couple years experience volunteer coaching at the high school level in a track club that is known for high performance athletes (caribbean country, our club sent 3 athletes to the last world juniors world juniors). I also plan on getting my level I USATF coaching certification and eventually my level I or II IAAF certifications.
I don't mean to bring up family connections, but my dad is a level V IAAF coach and was assistant coach on the London olympic team and he has been teaching me everything he knows about track and field. So I am very passionate and consider myself pretty knowledgeable.
I was a high school athlete but quit my university team because it interfered with my classes and I was pre-med at the time.
So what else should I be doing besides emailing coaches? Are the assitantship positions usually posted? Do they even exist! Any help would be very appreciated!
:)
