Now is the same - you can get 0.9% in a savings account and inflation is around 1.2%. You are losing money, but it's not a disaster.
That is why the recent situation is unusual. The Fed is forcing interest rates lower than they should naturally be. This is "unusual". Unusual = not usually this way... i.e. different than what is typcial.
