I disagree - the 3000m may very well be the softest among the 800m, 1500m, 3k, 5k, and 10k.
People here just get themselves wet over it since we very rarely see 7:2x, but that's not because of the inherent difficulty relative to similarly approaching other world records.
7:29.00 is (relative to distance) about the same off the world record as:
1:43.13 800m
3:30.17 1500m
12:51.23 5k
26:45.30
and all those times are rare enough, despite the fact that those distances are contested more often. The 800m and 1500m in particular have numerous fast setup attempts per year.
Didn't Rupp run 7:30 this year? Wake me when he gets similarly close to the 1500m or 5000m records.
I have said for years that the 3000m WR is not special in any way (well, for sure it is (absolutely fantastic), but so are the WRs over 1500m, 5000m and 10000m). And the argument that all the great ones (El Guerrouj, Bekele, Gebrselassie) could'nt beat this record, therefore it's "the best" - well, that's really one of the most stupid arguments I ever heard. Bekele's 12:37,35 is "better" than Komen's 7:20,67 - at least I think so. But there can't be a clear answer to this question. We don't even have a clear definition what "better" exactly means.
