Good team running by the Americans. They controlled it with Duane in it until the last 75 meters.

Did anyone else see Symmonds roll his eyesafter getting a hug from Aman?
Nick has been talking about his great endurance this year so it should not be a surprise that he went for it earlier in the race. The new strategy gave him a much better result than his old strategy ever did at the world level.
Good race by Nick but I had to see Duane lose it there at the end. I really wanted to see both medal.
It is crazy to see so many people in agreement on these boards over an American medal.
NICK MF SYMMONDS!
Great race by Nick. Really went for it. Probably a little too fast on the opening lap, but it's hard to hate on the guy for such a ballsy race.
well done symmonds, aman was great too
I generally have disliked Symmonds but he ran a great race and really earned that medal. He deserved it and has worked hard throughout his career to get to this point. Congratulations to him, and great job representing the USA.
NS and DS controlled the race from 400-700m.

Exactly, that was his mistake.

That would be an odd reaction considering the fact that Symmonds is the one who approached Aman and initiated the hug. I think you're misinterpreting the perceived eyeroll.
couldn't see this race but it sounds like his new strategy, one that many of us had recommended for years, really paid off, and almost resulted in gold. They needed to knock out sub 1:43 to make their chances of beating Aman very strong and they couldn't do it, but congratulations to Symmonds on breaking the drought and improving on Kenah's bronze from 16 years ago! Go Div III.
Is his result really any different from his last 6+ years of WC/OG competition? Yes he got the silver, but Rudisha, Amos, and Kitum weren't in the race. He may be the 2013 WC Silver medalist, but he's still only the 5th or 6th best 800m runner in the world this year.

If you watch him immediately after crossing the line, he has the look on his face like "Damn, that isn't a gold". I am guessing he knew the camera was on his face and gave an eye roll because he saw himself taking that win.
His mistake? Give us all a break!
NOBODY has ever believed in Nick Symmonds like he has believed in himself. The scornful criticism he has received here over the years is laughable.
He deserves only our praise.

No it wasn't. He was running on his strength, endurance. Had he waited for a fast finish he may not have meddled at all. Aman was simply a better runner.

Watching it, I had this same thought. I'd have to see it again, but I think he really started moving up at about 300 meters in which is not his norm (unless the pace was slow..wasnt really paying attention to it) Congrats a well deserved silver, though.
I think he was in his own head a little bit. Last year, he didn't put himself in position to medal early enough, and went home 5th. He wasn't gonna let that happen this year. But pushing too early might've cost gold. Still a great race. And a win for D3.
He should now focus on breaking the beer mile WR to cap off an excellent season
Symmonds is on a new undetectable dope regimen.
There was no mistake-he did what made sense in the exact right spots, and ran a near perfect race. If he didn't move up at the bell he would have snookered himself. Yes, it was a touch fast but he relaxed all the way to 120 left. Maybe he exerted too much from 100m to 60m left, but what the hell, he thought he was clear. So he tied up a bit-the guy still got a silver.
Way To Go Nick--you rocked it. No frickin' regrets.
