Ryan Hall is doing a 24 miler on a treadmill today

Ryan Hall is a good human being who has done nothing wrong. Why do people here fear his religious beliefs? People here who make fun of him are really afraid of him. People who feel anger or hatred for him talking about his religion actually fear him. Why are you afraid? I'm grateful to him for having the courage to be himself in public. The courage to keep going in spite of those of you who fear him and seek to tear him down in these forums. I'm grateful for the entertainment. Is not following his journey a form of entertainment? He freely gives that to us. It's one thing talking about his performances on the track (that's part of the entertainment of sports), it's quite another when you seek to belittle him. Wanting to tear him down and belittle him in public only reflects your own ethical and moral values, not his. Each post you make reflects you, not him, for it is your creation. It is what you are adding to the world. In the end, all you are adding is destruction and belittlement and fear. Make a case for your choice to belittle and tear him down as a person. And make sure to tie it to your value system. Go!

My bad, I realize that the tweet the OP is referring to is an @ tweet at somebody (@runnersworld, aka runner's world magazine's official twitter account), which would not be visible unless one were to click a regular tweet post--under which, then, the @ tweet would be filed under, as part of a conversation or as a response. In seriousness, I believe Canova* recommends to very long hill workouts (I don't recall specifics)...but many continuous miles uphill. Not sure why he'd do the whole thing on the treadmill though, b/c I think RC usually suggests ~10 mile aerobic capacity workouts on a 5% grade.

Um its not smokey out, I have seen zero people with a mask on and I am headed out for a run right now. There is more clouds than smoke in the air...

Ken Martin ran quite a few of his long runs on a treadmill before he ran his 2:09 in New York back in the late 80's. Jack Daniels was his coach !

The treadmill is excellent if you want to do a specific workout.

Getting some precise measurements about what happens to your body after 2+ hours of running could be useful to figure out how to counteract those changes.

I'll start by saying Ryan is an incredible athlete who has made some strange decisions in his career, but that's okay, we all do. However, talking about religion is a definite no-no, especially if you are the PUBLIC FACE OF A BRAND, PRODUCT OR SPORT. That is why he is mocked, and it's not due to fear. It's because when people talk about being coached by an omnipotent being publicly, it conjures up images of Jim Jones or David Koresh. Think about it...

Short answer to your questions? There are a lot of sh*tty people posting on this thread. Just avoid threads like this. No rhyme or reason to it; some people are just weirdly hateful.

Serious answer: you'd get the biomechanical measurements with a motion-capture system (i.e. high-speed video connected to an analysis program like Dartfish). And you could get metabolic measurements in a variety ways, with trade-offs in invasiveness vs. measurement detail. The most info would come from breathing into a tube connected to a metabolic cart, like you do in a VO2max test, but that would be pretty horrible for a 24-mile run. Another option would be periodic blood draws (or even being connected to an IV).

None of these options would be convenient outside (though not impossible). Like I said above, I have no idea whatsoever what Hall is doing (or even if he's really doing a 24-mile treadmill run!). But it wouldn't be totally crazy to do something like that once to get an accurate read on what happens to you late in the race. (There have been a number of studies in the last few years looking at biomechanical changes as runners fatigue during a run, and the effects can be quite significant.)

Hall is a great runner and seems like a nice guy. His wife seems great. He talks about faith - who cares? It's part of who he is.

I just wish we had more guys who ran as well as he does. And I hope he gets the most out of his running. I fear he is losing consistency.

5 years ago I hoped there would be 3 or 4 more Halls. Too bad no one has come around. Ritz just caught up a bit.

I dont think he was talking about physiological tests. He wants to run a controlled , paced effort with an exact resistance level as a conditioning effort without the pounding and recovery needed if done on the roads. Easy to manage fluid intake as well. Goal is to get a great effort in with as little damage as possible.

Its actually smart and effective.

He was having testing done in a lab in Flagstaff.
