Why are people so impressed by a 26:51?? Look what past winners ran if they scheduled a 10k before the championships! 26:51 is half a minute of the WR.
Mo, ?, Rupp

harder question to answer -- will Ritz break his 27:22 PR? or is he already thinking about Chicago
It seems to me that Ethiopia with 4 athletes could use team tactics to insure Farah doesn't win (or doesn't win 2 golds). But are they really focused on beating Farah--or on beating Kenya?
I could see Ethiopia saying, "OK, Farah gets his gold, but we want silver and bronze so Kenya doesn't get any." Makes a big difference in terms of how your team strategy is set up.
Also, does anyone know the status of Ibrahim Jeilan? I know he ran 13:09 in Eugene, but don't know any other results.

Do you get to the final of the WC 5k or 10k as a Kenyan or Ethiopian and run for silver? No. With respect, that is ludicrous.

I would bet my home & car that Ritz is 100% focused on the WC's.

It looks that way, on Universal Sports.

Nope, It looks like NBC is tape-delaying it for Saturday afternoon. Universal Sports is live just for the day session, not the evening session, which actually begins at 2PM (?) Moscow Time with the women's marathon.

I predict that Gebremeskel will win, and Farah will finish in second place.

I would love to see someone "do a Tadese" and push the pace but I can't see it happening. I think Mo will win (marginally) from Geb, with Merga and Kuma battling it out for the bronze 2-3 seconds back. I think Rupp will finish 6th or 7th around 7 seconds behind the winner.
I really hope someone takes the pace out hard and goes for it. I wish Rupp had the nadds for that type of move. Even if he ended up crashing and burning in the end, I would still have more respect for him.
Since the worlds are (besides the Olympics) pretty much the only time of the year when their is rigorous drug testing, I don't see Kenyans or Etheopians being a factor in this race. Should be a repeat of last year:
1. Mo
2. Rupp
3. Ritz
In other words, the clean guys on the podium.
The Kenyans are true to their word and take it out hard. The field gets split in half right away, with the Kenyans taking turns leading. The pace gradually slows, and 5k is reached in about 13:40. At around 6k, with the Kenyans falling off pace, someone, possibly Ritz, makes a dramatic move to the front and starts pushing hard. All of the contenders go with him, Farah and Rupp smartly staying out of trouble just behind the leaders. Between 8k and 9k, Ritz crashes hard, and Gebremeskel takes the lead, trying to grind the kick out of Farah. He opens a bit of a gap, but Farah keeps him in his sights, and with 400 to go, begins to narrow his lead. Farah takes the lead for good on the last curve, and pulls away easily to win with a time in the low 26:50's. Gebremeskel has just enough left to hold off a hard-charging Rupp, who gets the bronze, with both runners finishing 3-4 seconds behind Farah. Jeilan outkicks a chase pack to take fourth.
Take a look at WC video from Paris. Ethiopians paced slow first 5k as expected and then put the pressure on a for a sub 13 evenly paced last 5k working together. Took away possibility of a kickers race.
I think the cards will play out the same in Moscow.
It will be team effort.
That 1500 meters done in 3:28 was a great indication that Mo is ready roll. It also ensured a fast pace early in the race. So what does that translate to for Mo? Not sure really. It seems almost as if he is in a close position to where Galen was indoors. That may be bad if it does go hard in the beginning. Hard to question him being the favorite and winning though.
this is just a reply to mo f ability and how people intepret. maybe he is more suited for 1500 meter than the longer distances? 1500 m requires endurance. el g did do sub 13 (didnt he?) and would certainly have done good in the 10 000 m. also mo f did race at 1500/3000 as a youngster so he comes from that background from the very beginning. as opposed to haile geb and kenny b who came from the longer distances and still could produce 3.30 1500 meter races without having any real mid distance background. would i really wanna say is that maybe one shouldnt draw too much off his 1500 superb preformance. he lost to soi and he will lose if he isnt on his toe race day. if the kenyans do like tedesse tried with kenny b then maybe they can wear him out, the kenyans have more or less stopped doing those surges they used to do, particular against khalid "the maniac" skah. i hope that a new kid on the block wins after taking the lead 3 km from finish.
Anyone who thinks Rupp beats Geb is an absolute Moron
Shouldn't this thread be about the women's race? That is the only race being held in six days.
Talking aboit the men's race, why are we ignoring Karoki?
There will be surprises in the men's 5k and 10k.

Roll for 4 laps, maybe. Not 25.

Ritz is a very long shot for a medal, if not impossible. His only chance for a PR is if the race doesn't dilly dally. He should go for his PR, even if it means running his own race. If he doesn't medal and doesn't PR, he will have wasted the past four months. At least come home with something, and a PR is within his grasp -- 27:05 ?. Better yet, one of his personal goals is to break 27 in the 10K, and this would be probably his last chance to do it, as next year he will be 31 years old.

Man I would love to see that happen

I'm a proponent for some runners leading & pushing the pace- but in this race, not Rupp. His speed got him silver last year & he's run 3:51 & 3:52 miles this year. No way should he go at a ba||s out pace, diminishing his kick.
