Ahh I see, I thought you were using the search bar of the website (the Google-powered one). That explains it.

FWIW, it lets you search "pre" if you put it in quotes, and gives 83,693 results.

Yes, but that number also includes every occurrence of those letters, not just the references to Prefontaine himself. In other words, the total is inflated by the search engine counting hits on words like "pretty" and "pretentious."
Kip Litton 941 search matches
of course its AW. The greatest moment in Letsrun history was when he won the world 1500m with a sub 12 second last 100. OK so he miscounted the laps and didn't realise that he still had 600 to run, but wasn't that brief sprint the most exciting thing you ever saw (aside from pirate cat gun girl).

The full name Ritzenhein generates another 7000 or so results in addition to the 41000 for Ritz.
Considering the almost six to one relationship between Ritz and the full name Ritzenhein, I find it remarkable that there are almost 9000 results for the full name Prefontaine, about as many as for Ryun. Pre is not searchable because it is too short.
With slight rounding:
Rupp 69000
Webb 59000
Ritz 41000
Ritzenhein 7000
Hasay 13000
Ryun 9000
Prefontaine 9000
Pre ??????
A few others...
Hall 47000
Salazar 21000
Bekele 31000
Bolt 26000
Armstrong 16000

Actually, it's worse than that. The ~84000 results figure has nothing to do with words beginning with "pre'. You get the same result for anything typed within a pair of quotation marks. Try it.
As for getting a count for "Pre" man, you can use the Google search function of the Letsrun website as follows to get a count. Search for "Pre " and use the minus option to remove hits such as "at Pre", "Pre Classic", "pre-race", "pre-season", etc. The count I ended up with is 12900. Add that to "Prefontaine" hits and you've got 22000.
However, even THIS is not a proper apples-and-apples count for Pre. If you use the Google search function for Rupp, for example, you get a 21600 hit count, vs. 68600 on the Letsrun forum search, so it is improper to add hits on one search engine with hits from the other.
Since the Google search engine is more flexible, we'll stay with that. How many Google hits for Prefontaine? 5400. Total Google hits for Prefontaine + 'filtered' Pre = 18300.
Results using the Google search option (with some filtering, alternatives checking, and rounding) are:
Rupp 22000
Webb 19000
Ritz / Ritzenhein / Dathan 19000
Pre / Prefontaine 18000
Lagat 16000
Hall 16000 +/- 1000
Bekele / Kenenisa 14000
Farah / Mo 13000
Bolt 12000
Hasay / Jordan 12000

The Big Mazungo
It's between David Rudisha and Asbel Kiprop for me. Fluid running styles, unbeatable at their best.
Probably this race got me most excited:

It would seem to be George Zimmerman I am afraid to say
Hasay and Webb are neck and neck in this battle coming down the stretch. Wait a minute out of nowhere Kip Litton has crossed the line first.
Nobody cares about Hasay.
It's between Webb and Rupp. Probably Webb.

Pretty darn good for a general (non-Letsrun specific) search. Beats everyone on the list I posted except for:
Mo Farah - 1.5 million
Ryan Hall - 1 million
and one other name who surpasses all others by a tidal wave of hits:
Usain Bolt - 15.6 million
Des Linden: "The entire sport" has changed since she first started running Boston.
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
