Did Lance actually run hard. If so, how well did he do.
Lance pretty easily won. He actually went into the 2nd run of the race in 2nd place and moved into 1st during the run. He won by quite a bit. Don't forget that this guy ran cross-country and was a pro triathlete by the time he was 15-16yrs old. He is just pretty much an all-around bad-ass.
How come a runner is never athlete of the year?
Oh, that's right. Because runners aren't athletes.

James Raia in Endurance Sports News #36 laments that Lance doesn't deserve to win this year. He explains that LA should've won 4 years ago after his first Tour win and Annika Sorenstaam (sp?), the golfer, deserves to win this year.
There's something to what he says but the voting process for SI AOY is as convoluted as there are sports to try to pick one winner from. You can bet I'm gonna go out and buy an extra copy and post the LA cover in a prominent spot (with respect to the politics of the SI voting and Raia's reservations.)
I'm surprised to see that many runners on there.
Steve Cauthen? A freakin jockey is an athlete? What a pathetic year in sports that must have been.
Michael Johnson should have won in 1996
Who will win SI Sportsman in 2003, Ritz or Webb?
