Mo is like Steve Ovett, focused on winning races. The ONLY reason he started chasing records is because he was minimalized whern Coe started setting records. He took the bait. If there were another British runner setting faster times and setting records Mo would probably chase also.
I know this has been mentioned but go back and look at Coe or Ovett or El G's or bekele's records and you'll see that these athletes essentially run the last half of the race solo.
Please point to one race that Mo has won by more than a few seconds or that he was solo (not someone on his shoulder) with more than one lap to go. Mo is not suited to record chases and would have to amend his training and racing.
Rupp seems to like to chase records and does quite well at it. But honestly would you rather see a 3:50 indoor mile or an international mile win? How about a 7:30 3K or an international 5K win? I would rather watch Webb's Home Depot win over his American Record any day.
As an American fan I would rather see results than records. Athletes while still competing are NOT largely concerned about their legacy. They want to win now.
The only reason that Mo ran 3:28 was because he was chasing Kiprop. Take Kipriop out and Mo doesn't chase the rabbits and perhaps gets 3rd or 4th in 3:33-4. In other words Mo runs fast when chasing, never out of choice. He would rather sit and kick (or long drive for home in a slow 5K). Please refer to a case where he personally set a fast pace in a race.
