3:34 is not incredible for an 800 guy moving up. Especially one that has run 1:42 or 1:43. It's an ok performance.
As far as Symmonds goes I believe he made a mistake shadowing Leo for a lot of the race which ruined his race (even with a big pr). Compared to the others he should have more speed than most of the other guys and should have fought upfront for an even bigger pr.
