USATF doesn't send out uniforms to all the people processed "just in case". Those uniforms must be earned and are not just given out. At the moment Kara is on the team if nothing changes so USATF isn't just giving her the uniform just in case.

the current W10,000m team is 10,000: Flanagan(goes) Hastings and Goucher (both go unless Hasay/Erdman get standards).

10,000: Flanagan, Hastings. Hasay would be added if she gets A or B. Erdmann would be added if she gets A, or if she gets B and Hasay gets A. If both are added, they bump Hastings from team. Goucher could be added if neither Hasay nor Erdmann make team

Of course the alternates make the trip to worlds. That's what an alternate is for.

Yes the USATF gives out the uniforms to all of the possible team members. They cannot wait until the last minute. There is nothing "unearned" about Gouchers uniform. As of today she is on the team until July 20th.

You obviously do not know much. The alternates do not go to Worlds with the team. In a relay pool they will go, and may get a chance to run a prelim. But is other events on the team intending to compete go. By the way I am right in the middle of elite track and field. I have in fact been in the position of being an alternate and I assure you I did not get to make the trip. I watched the championships from my couch in the USA, and I did not receive all the gear because I was a possible team member.

Thanks for calling me out and saying I made up facts. No they are not made up, they are 100% accurate. If you don't believe me look up all potential alternates from the past few global championships and send them a Facebook message asking if they made the trip and got the uniform. The answer will be no.

Thoughts on alternate vrs relay pool.

The alternate selection is only put on the team to replace a team member. They only go if they replace someone as a team member. That sounds like when in alternate status the are not on the team.

A member of the relay pool goes with the team, trains with the team, is put up in the Athletes Village/official meet hotels and is listed in the relay entries just like any other team member. If the athlete actually runs the rounds or final he receives a medal if the team finishes 12or3. That sounds like relay pool runners are officially a team member.

That's the way I see it.

If this is the correct way to evaluate the alternate/pool member situation it leads to two questions:

1-Do the pool members that do not run lose there team membership status?

I'm not sure but am inclined to say yes. We could for transparency perhaps call them noncompeting team members but that feels awkward to me.

2-Do officially selected team members who are replaced lose their team member status?

Sadly for them I think the answer is yes.

Kara is simply saying "thanks for the kit, but I don't deserve this... at least not yet." and seems that she's pulling for Erdmann and Hasay to make the team.
