Galen Rupp in Emsely Carr Mile at London DL

A 3:50 mile is 57.2 pace for each 400 meters, and has no relation to the 72 second laps he runs in a 5k.

Unless, of course, they end up running the last 3-4 laps at south of 60 second pace as has happened in several of Galen's last 5000m races.

1) The point of speed work is not to improve top end speed.

and

2) The point of speed work is to not improve top end speed.

In a well-rabbitted raced, I think Rupp could go 3:48

Really, unless we know the planned rabbit pacing, or strategies, the best we can guess is what the ceiling might be. I guess people could take the average of all past miles here and do some statistical modeling, but I would say his ceiling is 3:48, but wouldn't be that surprised if his ceiling was approaching 3:46 territory. Call me crazy. He ran 3:50 indoors solo. That was what, 6 months ago?

Although, he's probably been doing more threshold training, because I think they plan their workout regiments in blocks, where after the US Champs, they rest and start a second cycle of rebuilding on top of the previous, err something like that. I bet he cold easily beat Brannen in a 2000m right now. I'll say that much....

Glad others agree on 3:48 as an absolute ceiling for Rupp. 3:49 or 3:50 is what it's going to be in this one.

The time is determined by the overall pace, not the finish.

It will be slower than 3:49-3:50 for the Ruppster.

The final time is not the most important thing. To medal in the Moscow 5000 and the Mowcow 10000 it's important to be in the right position with 800 to go and (even more so) with 400 to go. Hence maneouvering in a tight field at very high speed between 800 and 400 to go is the most important thing to train right now.

And the only effective way for Mo and Rupp to train that under competitive circumstances without having to take full days off afterwards this close to Moscow is to now go up against people who are able to and motivated to challenge them over the last lap in a shorter race.

Minor races' results and times are for the footnotes in the history books. Processes up to championships are about creating and setting up potential winners.
