That was tough to watch, and I think it's tough for people to comprehend that he can't just flip a switch and at least run within 8-10 seconds of his PR. It doesn't seem likely, though.

WEBBGATE 2013.

Last 300 in 45 spectacular closing speed. He did this off the hot pace of 1:56 for 800 which would be a blustering 3:37.5 if sustained. The first quarter was a ridiculous 57 which if maintained is 3:33.75 pace , one second faster than the united states only quality 1500 meter runner galen rupp. Only two others have the B standard, return of the 90's.

I agree that there's no need to beat up on Webb, but that poster's PR is irrelevant. Something's wrong here and it doesn't seem reversible. I guess if the AR holder in the mile is cool with this result, he can continue to line up and run. I'm not criticizing him for that. It seems like it would be pretty painful, but I've not been in his shoes.

He gets to make money because of what he's done. If you are the American Record holder you get perks like that. If he never did that one race he probably wouldn't be sponsored (since many Americans have made the finals in world championship events). However, he ran 3:46 which really needs to be considered about how good that is. SO many mile races we've seen have had good pacing where 3:30 or below runners are brought through 800 in 1:52-1:53 yet end up running 3:49 or 3:50 mostly because they are lazy and don't want to push the third lap. Webb went to Belgium for the main purpose of running as fast as he could and pushing it to the end, and for that he gets to be where he is now.

Also since he has run that fast in the past, there's the potential he could do it again if he stays healthy. High School runner Bernie Montoya could probably run 3:42.88 if he was in the race, but he hasn't run 3:30 for 1500m or set the American Record, so that's why Webb gets the sponsorship and he or other 3:42 runner don't.

I agree with you. He's getting paid for what he's done and he deserves that. But he hasn't done squat in 5 years, and frankly, running 3:42 when you have all the advantages of one of the best training groups in the world doesn't cut it. And that's his SB. There comes a time when you need to hang it up - and its my opinion his time has come. But hey, if he can continue to make bucks for what he is doing - more power to him. I'm just saying that its time for him to start thinking of his next move in life.

BTW - can't believe I'm getting hate on this thread after predicting Webb's time tonight within 12/100 of second. What !?!
