However imagine a world where Callahan was healthy this outdoor season. And the 1500m final went down the way it did..
No one would have out kicked Callahan. Not even Mac "best kick" Fleet.
Hopefully we get to see two healthy outdoor seasons of Callahan at New Mexico.
It's pretty easy to look good in the DMR where you only need to outkick 1-2 guys.
I would have won the Olympic 100m final if I were faster than Usain Bolt. Alas, I am not.
That's a pretty big what if. But I think you're probably right. Even the injured version of Peter Callahan who barely won Heps would have had my money in a race like that.

I'm as big of a fan of Callahan as anyone but this is a big stretch.
Mac Fleet was second in the NCAAs as a freshman - true freshman right? indoors. That's a big talent.
He closed in 52.22. His last 200 had to be 25 something.
In the DMR, Callahan blew everyone away running a 54.8/26.2.

And it would be his second race in three days - which is a lot for the fragile Callahan.

The last time the Callakick faced Mac Daddy was an 800m race at Nike Outdoor Nationals in 2009 and Callahan weaves through traffic in the last straight to nip Fleet at the line.

The DMR anchor leg and the open 1500 are totally different. Callahan had a perfect setup at indoor NCAAs. He got the baton in third, less than .7 seconds down from the leader. Villanova was close 4th, but the next team after that was over 2 seconds behind. All Callahan needed to do was sit tight and sprint past 3 guys at the end. Compare this to the 1500m final last weekend. All the guys are in it from the beginning. Callahan would not be gifted perfect position in an already strung out race, he would have to jockey for it with 11 other guys.
Callahan's kick is understated because we never seen him fully healthy on a national stage. In 2013 NCAA DMR the nation saw, but he has shown off his nasty kick at Heps the past 4 years. People who follow Heps would put their money on Pete in a kickers style 1500m race.

I think Brett Johnson also would have been a contender to win. He has run 3:38 twice during his redshirt season this spring. He has improved 6 seconds from his pr while at Virginia. He's going to be a big name and a major contender next year.
A better headline would be that it was the slowest winning time since 1952

He has his good days and his "finish on the ground" days; his reputation has exceeded his record
