GOAT in high school sure but nobody is going to care in 3 years. Now, if she can beat the collegiate records of 1:59.11 by Suzy FH, and any of Jenny Barringer Simpsons marks of 3:59.90, 15:07.64, or 8:42.03ind, then that would be impressive.

I wonder why they would want to use the 5K as the backup race. Given he 800 at Pre one would think that would be her backup in case the 1500 goes wrong. I'm sure she could go under 15:30 on a all out effort but there are far more women who can do that than can run 1:59.5 after barely going out sub 60
Having to do the heats of the 800 and 1500 would make qualifying in either event almost impossible. The 5000 is a good backup because it's a day after the 1500 final.

Puskreda at Oregon always reminded me of a slightly less talented version of Salazar with the same strengths and weaknesses. Puskreda was among the top NCAA runners in XC all 4 years and excelled on the track his senior year. I look forward to some Puskedra surprise performances.

More precisely, the 800 semi is the day after the 1500, while the 5000 is three days later. If Mary did a Uceny in the 1500, she would have to do the 800 the very next day. The 5000 as a backup would provide adequate rest from a 1500 heat.
alright she ran a 15:45, can people finally stop the ridiculous notion that she can run in the low 15:20's or go after the World A-standard. I figured she could run in the 15:40's, maybe high 15:30's, and apparently that was spot on. She closed the last 800 well, which means she could probably run 15:40 if she attacked the race a little bit more in that second mile.
She trains as a 1500 runner, she's got great range but she is still only in high school, so doesn't have the endurance of someone who has had a bunch of years in the sport. Her 5k will probably take another 3 or 4 years to start getting close to the level of her 800/1500.
And to those silly people who say a 4:04 guy can pretty much always run 15:20. That's not at all true. Sure that's more than true if they are a 5k guy - a pure distance guy can probably run 15:20 off a 4:15. And true even for a 1500/5k guy with good endurance, but certainly not true for an 800/1500 runner, which is what Cain is right now. She just ran a 1:59, obviously her training is middle distance focused. Next year she'll probably run 1:58.0, 3:58, 8:40 and 15:25-30

Cain can probably dip into 15:20s right now. This 15:45.4, while incredibly close to missing the A, was obviously exactly what she was supposed to do achieve.
Rationale: She's raced quite a bit in the last month and I'm sure her training/lifestyle regiment has been much different than it was a few months ago. Having her absolutely tax out on a 5000m 12 days before championships would make zero sense. That is why this was a controlled race for a set objective--sub 15:46.

This would make perfect sense....
EXCEPT she had to close really fast after dieing to barely squeek under 15:46...
If it was a controlled race to hit 15:46..she woulda been on 15:46 pace throughout and not had to have a big kick over final 800 to barely get it...
So...it was exactly what you said made no sense, a hard 5k 12 days out..
To the people that stated Cain has every HS record from 800m - 5000m
This is false
She does not hold the outdoor 3000m, 2 mile, or mile.
She also does not hold the outdoor 1000m, or 2000m (not that people care about those distances in high school)
But until she breaks the outdoor 3000m, 2 mile, and mile records it cannot be said that she holds every HS record from 800m - 5000m (outdoors)

She's got the 3000m.

Indoor, not outdoor. She ran faster than the outdoor record (9:08), but she hasn't run the 3000 outdoors this season. Lynn Bjorklund (1975) is still the record holder at this time - oldest US HS record.

Sure she has the 3000m outdoor record (and not the indoor record).
Ask Track and Field News. They're the de facto record keepers on this.

Cain can probably dip into the 15:45.46 right now, because that's what she just did in a race that was clearly all out given the fact that she was well off her stated goal pace until she kicked to run a much faster final 800. Yeah with a few more tries she could run a bit faster, but to try to say that race wasn't all out when it clearly was is silly. 15:20's next year - absolutely. Now - no way in hell.

Wow, that was close, with a 2:22 last 800m.
This race proves that Cain is somewhat human anyway.
The goal for Cain was just to run the standard and more.

Not according to Track and Field News, the only people that really keep track of this stuff.
Her 9:04 was on a flat 300m track. Not eligible for indoor record purposes. If the track is flat, Track and Field News doesn't care if it's got a roof over it, only that it's not longer than 400m.
They count her 9:04 as the outdoor record and this will be reflected once they update their high school records page.
As Garry Hill wrote:
"Like the IAAF (and unlike the USATF dinosaurs), T&FN doesn't care if there was a roof overhead. If it's a properly measured track with no banking, then it's the overall record, plain and simple."
No
