Took me 8 months to go from mid 19s to mid 18s, then about 6 more months to break 18, and 4 months more to break 17.
helps figuring out how to train and losing a bunch of weight.
What kind of training do you do? Height?weight? Do i really half to get down to 140 to break 18?
Whats' your training like? How many easy workouts? how many hard if any?

159 lbs is heavy for a 5'8" guy who wants to run a fast 5k.
yea but i have heard of guys my weight or heavier who are running 17's no prob.. now 16's that would be another story
i'm 18 and i run in the high 16's low 17's and how i train is Tuesdays speed and Friday i run stuff like mile progressions tempo's etc and Saturday's off and when meets come around my schedule changes a bit and each week is different so your not doing the same thing over and over but if i were i would give it a year and commit to want to breaking 18 make sure you keep a healthy life style and hydrate for me though i just chug water bottles throughout the day and stretch after my runs and sometimes roll out on a foam roller i don't commit to a specific diet plan i just do what works for me because everyone is different just don't over do on the sugars and fatty food i wouldn't recommend eating fast food but if that's what works for you go right ahead and i'm 5'10 1/2 and i weigh 152 pounds i would assume you should be less than me
and once you break 18 you will realize how much of an accomplishment you gained and you will want to keep on going and also for speed days don't over train and usually my easy day runs which are everyday beside my speed days and i worked from a 8 minute pace at the biginning of my training now i'm running my easy runs at 6:40-7:00 pace i just feels whatever is easy and i just go and build a base don't start off doing speed work right away give it 2 weeks before you start doing a little speed the other day i had a 3200 meter time trial and i was hoping to break 10 but on the first 2 laps i went to hard and hit 2:19 then it went all down hill from there i hit the first mile in 4:50 then the 2nd in.........5:28 it wasn't a good day i wasn't feelin it i started to fatigue in my arms and my lungs hurt afterwards since that was basically my first race
do you have a coach? do you have someone creating you a proper training plan?

140? i ran it at 155!
my training is like most people's training. that's sort of the non-secret. two decent workouts, a few doubles, lots of easy runs.
absolutely nothing special, just got to hold back enough so that you can KEEP training ALWAYS. consistency is the key.
Your question is how long to break 18:00. At 159 about 18 months to 2 years by running alone. It shouldn't take you more than 30 weeks to drop 19 pounds and that would also get you to 18:00.

Guys your weight, your age, with your talent, your training, your fitness, your aerobic system...there's a lot that goes into this.
It's not just automatic, some can; most can't.
I'm 5'11" and about 175 and I just broke 18 a little while ago. I think the key to mine was getting on the track and doing mile and 800 repeats once a week and doing a longer threshold run (~4-6 miles)once a week and making sure to keep my easy runs easy and my hard runs hard.
But I would say that you could probably get there in less than a year if you put some harder workouts in.
Hey there. Yea this is somethin i'm doin on my own no coach.. With running I have been able to find a little solidarity in life, away from the wife, and screaming kids.. Also a great stress reliever.. You guys who haven't hit 34 will see what i'm talkin about someday, the mid life crisis yrs.. haha
This is only my second yr out on the road of running so I think i'm doing quite well for an old baseball player ;)
Did another 5k time trial today in 19:07 so i'm gettin better..Really think if i woulda pushed it a little harder i coulda had my sub 19.. Went out in 5:38 first mile was originally planning to push it for a mile and that was gonna be it but curious me had to keep chuggin.. oh well there will be other opportunities..
Also hoping to have my sub 18 by fall... is that legitimate? 1 min 7 secs in 6 months ? or should i shoot for 18:30.. thanks for the help guys.
dream big man! you can definitely run a sub 18 by fall just keep health train smart and get advice from others and always STRETCH after runs at least 30 seconds for each stretch or more! hydrate to thats the biggest thing a lot of runners have trouble with!
I'd say focus on your academics. Your current spelling and grammar won't due.
Guess my professors thought otherwise I made it all the way to a masters degree ;)
