However if they're focused on the mile, they might not be as good in cross country.
They always win league in cross, i believe Tamagno was third or second with Corcoran of Villa Park and Goins of Canyon

Century League is insanely fast this year with the 3 Brea guys, another from Canyon, One from El Modena and the fastest one from Villa Park.
that's right. i've been waiting for letsrun to catch on. I was working the timing the canyon/ VP dual meet a few weeks ago when I saw the canyon guy run 4:15 and VP go 4:19. my jaw dropped. What's more impressive is that their first 800 split was 2:10, and they hammered the final 400m. this was the wednesday following the APU meet of champions, when they ran 4:18 and 4:13 respectively.
Prelims on Saturday and Finals are next week. Should be a good meet!

Im a jv nobody in that league, watching these guys push each other to their limits is great to watch
austin is still a chump
Pretty amazing time for a freshmen.
Pretty sure also that's a new USA National frosh class record.
He is an experienced club runner though so will not progress as much as a kid who just started running their freshman year.
Why does Brea-Olinda get so lucky getting all these club kids? My high school team never once had a kid that ever ran in a club before high school.
I think a college team-mate of mine coaches at Villa Park. Seems like they've had some pretty good runners over the yrs.

all freshmen are chumps, so that's not saying much. the real chump is the one whose sister can kick him down.
Just curious what did Jim Ryun and Alan Webb run as freshman?
the coaches in the century league are all top notch--it's really no surprise to see the talent catch up to the coaching.
Brea: Jeremy is passionate and knowledgeable, and combined with a strong supporting parent staff, an excellent women's coach (Matt), and easy access to quality trails makes it a quality program.
Villa Park: Dave has been coaching there since the '70s and has had some excellent runners over the years. 2 previous athletes that I know of are coaching collegiately (Elders @ CSUF and Beck @ CMS), as well as coaching Jim Sorenson (2nd place 1996 Oly Trials 1500) and Augie Escobar (#1 CA 2 miler in '99 or '00). When he gets talent that wants to put in the work, the results show.
Canyon: I forget the coaches name, but he's doing a decent job over there attracting talent. they have the league leaders in the 400 and 800 right now too.
Foothill: Cush needs no introduction here, and it might be a down year in talent for them on the men's distance side, but he also does a great job of putting together great teams and individuals.
What's crazy is that many students can choose Canyon, El Modena and Villa Park, since they're in the same district.
As far as distance running goes, this is probably the toughest league in the US right now.

Ryun ran a 58 second 440 in 8th or 9th grade.
His first mile in 10th grade cross country was 5:38, then he progressed through the season to get 6th place at state.
Wow, Jim Ryun sure did progress as a sophomore! From a 5:38 mile in XC to a 4:07.8 mile in the spring.

From another school in the league, pretty sure a fair number of brea guys frequent the boards for their troll fix
The century league has been going through a distance renaissance as of late. I think it started right around 2011 once Esperanza High and Foothill High joined. It's been getting better and better since then. The 1600 is of course the event that gets the most attraction (and the best times as demonstrated) with guys under 4:30 and a few under 4:20, but it's pretty solid across the board from 800 to 3200, with guys going under 2:00 and a few hovering around the 1:55 range from time to time, and lots of guys going under 9:40 and others under 9:20. It's a great time to be a distance runner in the century league.
Canyon's coach is Patrick Bendzick. He does an outstanding job. He always has a solid pack on the girls' side, and his boys' team is young (aside from Goins) and very strong. Personable and smart, Pat is the reason Canyon has emerged on the so cal distance running scene.
Out of all the coaches in the league, Esperanza's Rich Medellin may have produced the best teams and individuals. With state meet team podium finishes in XC and individuals like Courtney Pugmire and Ryan Bousquet, Rich knows how to help young athletes reach high levels of success.
And let's not forget Cush works with Matt Bell at Foothill. What a combination!
With all that said, yes, we have some great coaches, but the athletes have to do the work and believe in the system. Apparently, many do just that, with results thus far leading us into a highly anticipated 1600 showdown at league finals:
Corcoran - Villa Park - 4:10
Tamagno - Brea - 4:11
Goins - Canyon - 4:15
Koryta - Brea - 4:16
Janneck - Brea 4:18
Walsh - Canyon 4:22
Gidabuday - El Modena - 4:23
