In no way is that physics. Sure, a bouncy ball will bounce less in mud than it does on concrete, but in both cases a bouncy ball (your Cain) will still bounce higher than something soft like a pillow (your Baxter). The pillow does not have an advantage in the mud.
Furthermore, foot strikes do not work like bouncy balls. It is all about pushing off the ground. If you push harder than the other person, then you will be faster. Mud or no mud. Mud affects everyone in the same way. THAT is physics.

To Jonnestard:
Cain is without question training MUCH harder than Baxter and basically living a professional athlete lifestyle.
Here is what we know about the two:
-According to his interview http://marathonradioproduction.com/podcast
Mary Cain runs 50-60 Miles Per week
-According to this article http://www.runnersworld.com/high-school-profiles/baxter-runs-sweet-16-mt-sac
Sarah Baxter maxes out at 40-45 Miles Per week.
-Mary Cain has access to professional level equipment such us the "shoulders back" device she has been wearing to improve her form...mentioned in this article http://www.newsday.com/sports/women-s-sports/bronxville-teen-mary-cain-becomes-a-middle-distance-sensation-1.4669700
-Mary Cain has been seeing OTC Sports Psychologist Dr. Darren Treasure
-Sarah Baxter takes ONE MONTH OFF after BOTH XC and Track season
-Mary Cain did not break after XC season.
-Mary Cain is coached by not one but TWO Olympians.
Just wait until Sarah Baxter has access to just one of those HUGE advantages. -

Without those "advantages" under Jim Mitchell Mary C
ran 55.5/2:03.34/4:39, still far advanced from Sarah B
She's going to be a 5k/10k X-C collegiate, unless her
developement progresses ala Abby D'Ag to where her
strength can allow her to succeed at the shorter distances -

Um no that is not physics. That is just wrong. On a really soft surface like mud or snow the weight per unit area that contacts the surface makes a difference. That's why skis and snowshoes work. -

Yes, that is physics. Unless you're telling me that balls don't bounce higher than pillows. These girls aren't running in deep mud or deep snow. They are running on the ground. No, an inch of mud does not turn this into deep mud and snowshoes. Wherever you got your degree, ask them for a refund. -

You have no clue what you're talking about. Try watching the race sometime. There was a lot more than an inch of mud on the course in many places. But even if there was only an inch areal loading makes a difference on a soft surface. -
I know exactly what I'm talking about. The amount of mud they were running in has nothing to do with pressure effects. It's negligible and irrelevant. The faster runner won. The slower runner lost. Your pressure effects are only relevant in deep, liquid mud.

Are you kidding me, ducking any runner is absurd. I mean the Arcadia Invitational is a National event. Where were the other two runners?
