Rupp would have won XC Champs
Rupp would have won XC Champs
Thanks for the heads up. Other posters as well. Boy did we pay attention to Coogan last summer at the Trials.
No question the Upper Valley is beautiful with some great running. Thanks again.
I beat True in a race once.
It was back in college after an easy run in the rain. Coach told us to run strides with spikes. Ben stupidly forgot to wear spikes and the track was covered in puddles. I designated that we'd have a fifty yard race and that I'd call out the start.
I caught him mid-sentence with the call, got the jump on him, and gutted out a big win.
Ben -- you know it. I know it. And now the world knows it.
Spikes for the win!
Also I was ahead of him on a couple of intervals if we're counting those.
I read your post before he did so I beat him too!
pfff 10 years ago, Withrow and Rupp were stomping him!

I beat ben true over the hanover golf course hills easily - heck, he hadn't even been born yet.

True is a beast indeed. Also, the course was slick and tough, which was probably an advantage for him. He comes from Maine where the sidewalks are icy half the year and also has a developed sense of balance from lots of skiing.
I remember racing him back in high school. Well, if you can call trailing by 100m "racing". Good guy.
sidewalks?
what part of Maine could you be from?
No one asked.

We aren't
Last year, Leavins cleaned his clock.
But True has always been a great X Country runner.

Given my user name and my familiarity with Ben, I bet you could guess. If you're familiar with Maine geography anyway. And if you aren't, why the dig on us having no sidewalks? At least I think that's what you were saying.
This is about what I expected from True coming into the year, maybe marginally better. I expected more from Derrick though. The comp wasn't that great. I expect True to be 27:25-27:30 10k, so his time behind the winner doesn't surprise me. Derrick I expect 27:15-27:20 if he got in a good one in peak form.
It's true, I've been MILFING.
Everybody is talking like they were running against a bunch of hobos out there. Check the PR's and you'll see they were beating 59 minute/12:50 guys. Credit where it's due. Derrick just ran 13:12 indoors, he'll be close to 13 flat/27:0x by this summer. True is a mud beast, if he could find a track made of mud and snow, he could put up tose times as well (j/k)

I haven't posted since my college days running far behind True, but I just have to say how awesome it is to see Ben really break through. He is a total class act, hard working, humble, and genuine guy. I think I speak for anyone who's known or run with/against him that we couldn't be happier to see this success.
As an American track fan, I'm also super psyched by this result. Congrats to the whole team, what an awesome finish by them all.
True looks like a man amongst boys. Shows that you don't have to be a scrawny she-man to be fast.

I didn't say they were hobos. All i said was i expected True to be about 26 seconds behind over a distance around 10k which is what people seem to be saying it was closer to. I don't think 27 flat guys are "hobos", but i do think they are slower than the guys who used to win it like Bekele (obviously), and other 26:30/26:40 guys from Ethiopia/Kenya. Merga is a 12:53/26:48 guy, but those Prs are from 2010 and 2011. He seems on the downward side of his career.
Korrir who won has a pr of 13:11? I'm sure he's better than that, but still he's never done anything major. The guy in 3rd has a 13:04/27:16 prs. These are guys i expect True to lose to, but be a respectable distance behind. So i stand by what i said. I expected True with the way he's been running to be around where he was. US nats i would say he slightly underperformed. I expected Derrick after the year he had last year and his great win at USA's to do a bit better. I'm not saying he did poorly, just that i didn't expect him to lose to True and thought he could get closer with his improvements that he's made.
It's not neccesarily an insult anymore to the Kenyways when you say you expected a US guy to be closer to a Kenyan guy.

Hey, relax. It was supposed to be a good natured tease, not a dig. I still call Maine home myself--although I moved away many years ago. I guess you must be from Cumberland County--I spent a couple of years there, but for a good many years, did all my running in Hancock and Penobscot Counties. Within 25 miles of my house when I was in high school, I bet there was maybe a quarter mile of sidewalk.
I'm thrilled to see guys from Maine do so well on a national and international level. Sorry if you took offense--it wasn't intended
