PS;
Technically Smith was paid to leave, not fired.
Smith had 2/3rds of the right idea. And the third he had wrong turned off too many people and so he sowed his fate...with a big buyout.
You have to understand that getting a Rupp, an Eaton, a Wheating, and a Centrowitz (and Puskedra, and Acosta...and...) at the same time ALMOST NEVER happens for any school.
Rupp -- total fluke fell into Salazar's hands.
Wheating -- total fluke, fell into J Johnson's hands and then Vins.
Eaton, local talent, who knew he could set a world record when he was a recruit??
Centrowitz, a legacy talent, who never would have gone to Oregon if the Lame Ducks had not gotten antsy to revive the program.
My point, you're never going to have enough luck or scholarships at Oregon for Oregon to win the DMR etc. on a regular basis.
We had 5 runners go under 4 minutes in the mile this indoor season.
So there is talent there...I just don't expect their to be a "golden age" all the time.
These things come in cycles, some of it is planning and recruiting etc., and a huge part of it is luck.
