Yes, actually they do have something to do with running well. Small, light calves that generate a lot of power are good for running. For every exception, you'll find that most of the best runners would have what I would call "light, skinny calves", meaning they aren't exactly bulging with muscles. Even the sprinters. You can tell by the look of somebody's calves and ankles whether or not they are a good athlete. Somebody with cankles won't be a good athlete.
