3:50 and change indoors...give him 5 more months of quality mile training - I think he can drop a second a lap and break Webbs record. It's not a ridiculous concept anymore...
Rupp can own every AR from the mile through the marathon in the next 2 years. What a great time to be a running fan!
I'm more interested to see his specialty events, but if you can rip a 3:50 indoor mile, it blurs the line between what your specialty is.
Yeah, I never would have thought this was possible, but I guess it is now. I've been thinking about how fast Rupp is over 10k and how fast he runs his flying 80s, but now he's combined them in a blazing indoor mile.
Didn't Webb have even more speed though? His mile record was very well paced too, he didn't slow the third lap like so many do. I think Rupp can get close outdoors, but I'll still be surprised if he gets the American record.
He definitely can do it. I would be surprised if he does not at this point. If he continues to run this fast then I think he should consider trying to do the 1500m/10,000m double in 2016.
As soon as he ran 3:50i I immediately thought Webb's record was in jeopardy but now that I think about it, it's still a bit of a reach. There is a big difference between 3:46 and 3:50. Rupp is also no stranger to running fast early indoors so we can't put too much weight into "it's early indoors, he'll drop tons of time outdoors." It is possible that he could break it if he really focused on it but he is still gunning for 5k/10k. He is working on his speed right now but he isn't going to be focusing on the mile long enough to make a serious attempt at the record.
That being said, I would love to see the record broken. I think the biggest argument for Rupp is the fact that he ran the 3:50 solo. With a rabbit he could go a bit faster.
He's on drugs 100% certain so it doesn't matter.
You can not improve every single year as he does at that level. Your body has to have positive and negative physical cycles. There's only one thing keeping him on the uprise......

Obviously this is all geared toward the 5/10K World Championships. To me this suggests he is going to make a serious run at a 5000M medal. Which he should. He has plenty of time to win more medals at 10000M. But at this point in his career he is not going to get any faster. Next year is an off year. Now may be his best chance at a 5000M medal if he is ever going to win one.

Oh yeah, that's right. I forgot that 3:50.92 rounds to 3:51, but 3:46.91 rounds to 3:46. I guess he's 5 seconds off still!

I doubt he will even try this year - but 2014 is an off year - maybe in 2014 he'll target some fast do or die time trialed, heavily rabbited AR attempts.
Probably 2013 is indeed his best shot at a gold medal - which he needs to be considered the GOAT American.
Certainly he will have/keep the 5k/10K ARs - the mile/3k will be a big stretch though.

I hope you're talking about Rupp specifically and not 10k runners in general. Back in '07 Bekele ran a 3:32.35 1500 which converts to sub 3:50. Rupp is right where he needs to be to become the best, but nothing out of the ordinary.

2) He doesn't care about records at non-standard distances.

Ok. I didn't watch the race but was going off of what others said in a different thread. It is still an impressive run, but not as much as I had thought.
the mile AR's a stretch but possible after this, whereas the 3k AR should be his, as he's now improved 7 seconds in the mile while already being a low 7:30s type.
He may not because he specifically trains in the winter for lower events like 1500/3000m, but specifically trains for the 5000/10,000 in the summer. That is why we might not see his best 1500m in the summer.
Another thought for this thread... You never know when you're going to run your career best in a mile. This may be the fastest he ever runs the mile. O'Sullivan (number two on the all time indoor mile list) ran his fast mile indoors. I hope Rupp beats this time and has a sub 3:50 effort somewhere, but this was a great time.
