I was talking with my friends at dinner tonight discussing Bernard Lagat. We have all noticed that his competitiveness in the 5K is slowly diminishing. He doesn't seem to have the speed at the end to compete with top runners Farah, Rupp, etc. We were discussing if he should try the 10K since he seemed to have success transferring from the 1500. Just wanted to hear others opinions if they think he could move up to the 10K and be more competitive or if you think it is near the end of the road for him.
Could Lagat have a future in the 10K

Nope. He's done.
-
I don't think so. I wouldn't expect much faster than 27:30 if he gave it a go, but I could be wrong.
-
I'm also thinking that he is getting towards the end of his career. He is nearly in his 40's and I feel like he is just starting to loose his speed. I still think he is a great runner and would love to see him do well. I feel like the world championships might be the end for him though

He can't compete with Rupp and Farah in the 5k, so he should go to the 10k where he will be competing with.... Rupp and Farah?
Nope, that doesn't make a lot of sense. -
I think we are forgeting that if he wouldn't have tripped or been tripped in the olympics 5k he would have won at least the bronze medal. He only finished .6 seconds out of third!
Lagat still has quite a bit of finishing speed. He should stick at 5k he could still win a WC medal.
Oh yeah and in that race he had better speed then Rupp so let's not say he is slow quite yet. -
I thought I remember reading that Lagat doesn't feel mentally in tune with running such long distance. Let alone having the physical capability to compete.
-
Lagat can't keep up with Rupp? Did you watch the Olympics or Zurich? He dusted Rupp in both.

You don't need as much speed for the 10k - something he is losing. -
I seem to recall Lagat saying he'd like to run a 10000 before he retires, but I seriously doubt he'd ever specifically train for it. That being said, I think he could approach 27:00 if he did. I definitely think he'd run under 27:30 though.

with or without "help"?

doesn't he do like 70 a week? needs more volume

Uh, the argument was about the closing speed of Rupp and Farah in the 5k.
Speed they bring to the 10k. If he doesn't have it in the 5k, he definitely doesn't have it in the 10k.
Like I said, that doesn't make a lick of sense. -
Isn't Lagat pushing 40 now? He needs to hang them up soon.
-
51.46 close at usatf 5000m says that lagat shouldn't retire.
-
Lagat gets tripped on the last lap and finishes 4th in the Olympic 5,000m and Letsrun says "he's done."
Forgive me if I disagree. -

No
The argument was that Lagat no longer has the speed to close in the 5k.
He may have the speed to close in the 10k.

????
If he doesn't have the speed in the 100m he definitely doesn't have the speed in the 400m.
This is basically what you just said.
Do you see why this is nonsense? -

I know you're reading impaired, so I'll just quote it for you and hope the repetition finally penetrates.
"We have all noticed that his competitiveness in the 5K is slowly diminishing. He doesn't seem to have the speed at the end to compete with top runners Farah, Rupp, etc."

Again, your inability to comprehend what you're reading is coming into play.
I said: "Speed they (Rupp and Farah) bring to the 10k. If he (Lagat) doesn't have it in the 5k, he definitely doesn't have it in the 10k."
So if his speed is holding him back against the likes of Rupp and Farah, then it doesn't matter if it's a 5k or a marathon, he won't be able to beat them.
Now that I've gone and explained this to you in as elementary a way as possible, I hope you will finally concede that you (per your usual) don't know what you're talking about. -
Lagat said in an interview last year that after Worlds he was going to take to the roads, which I assume means at least 5K/10K. I don't think he is interested in running the track 10K, but by virtue of his 5k capability, we can assume he could run a decent track 10k. Also, he was a very good NCAA level cross country runner and he use to do long runs with Abdi when he was doing his marathon build up.
To answer your question, could Lagat have a future in the 10k, most likely yes, will he have a future in the 10k, most likely no. -
