I'm not sure what kind of quality of life you can have when you're strapped to a massive mortgage. I have a few college friends who live on the West Coast and they all work 60+ hours/week for the privilege of living there. God knows they don't have hardly any free time to enjoy whatever it is that makes that area better to live in.
For me "qualify of life" means having a huge backyard, a garden, no debt, and not really having to go to work if I don't want to. I can do whatever I want, whenever I want, because I'm not strapped to a massive debt. That's freedom, and makes for a high quality of life.
