This line concerned me a bit:
"When I left Nike last year, I often thought back to my interactions with a known drug cheat like Lance."
What did he mean by a drug cheat LIKE lance? Did he know someone else who took PEDs?

...or he felt he should limit his comments to athletes he had or has some coaching responsibility for.
He still coaches Sarah Hall, he mentions her. He still coaches Areson, he mentions her. He coaches Ryan Hall's wife so he mentions him. Webb seems to pop in there for some reason - dunno about him.
But seriously, I think some of you are reading too much between the lines.

"A known drug cheat like Lance" - who else would be a "known" drug cheat that he might have worked with? I don't think any NOP athletes are "known" drug cheats. There are lots of inferences being made here that it's not clear Magness intended.
What do Salazar adn his boys have to say about this? Is it possible for someone to try and land an interview with them and ask these same questions and speculations that everyone else here has?

In the comments on Competitor, someone with a Facebook account needs to ask if Magness meant to imply anything about the Oregon Project.

Or you can click the "contact me" button on his website and ask him directly:
http://www.scienceofrunning.com/p/about-me.htmlchances are he won't respond to the article comments
I don't know. If it's so plain, I can't figure out why I didn't see it. I read and re-read the article. The only person who seems to be implicated as taking drugs is Lance.I think it is the "reader" who leads the reader to believe that the Oregon Project is implicated.

Why he does that can be anyone's guess.
But its pretty plain to see.

Let's see, what do Salazar, Rupp, Ritz and Mo all have in common? --They are all extremely religious -- to the point where the idea of them using PEDS is insane.
Here is how insane it is.
If they were caught using PEDS the following things would happen. 1.) There would be a Congressional Investigation against Nike. 2. There would be an investigation by state authorities into Vin Lananna and the Oregon Track program.
There is far more testing for college track athletes (who compete internationally as Rupp, Wheating, Centro, et. al., have done) than there is for college football players.
I don't have any dog in this fight. I am curious about one and JUST ONE thing that you say. If "they" were caught cheating, why would there be a congressional investigation against Nike?
Riddle me that.

How about you use your brain and read between the lines. If Magness saw anything illegal, he is obligated to report it. And if he had done so while at a company like Nike, he would have had the large bonus that he could not be fired/terminated, and that he could win a large whistle blower reward.
You are a F-ing idiot if you think all whistle blowers are ensured protection from serious backlash and guaranteed any kind of reward. Especially amongst many of the largest corporations.
I wish you were right, but the world doesn't work that way nowadays. Corruption is quite common.
Interesting. When Mary Decker Slaney failed a drug test late in her career, her coach at the time was none other than Alberto Salazar.

Glad you're doing research, but this is widely known on this board.

Magness is not a high level elite coach , he has been around world class athletes but he not recognized by anybody in the world of coaching as a real coach.
Renato Canova 100% disagrees with you seeing as how he followed Magness at a convention and basically stated if his English were better, he'd say what Magness had just said.

What ever happened to Adam Jacobs? Is his death germane?

Great, great piece, sjm.
Your future may reside in track journalism and commentary in addition to your coaching prowes. We need many more people like you.
Also, Llewellyn Starks still works at Nike in track and field sports marketing.
please, this "piece" (good name for it) is as self-serving as anything Lance has ever done.
"Hey look at me, I barely knew the the guy I'm trying to capitalize off his infamy because I am sooo much better than him. I even told my athletes to beat him. Pat me on the back!!!"
Cetainly puts things from the El G era into perspective, as well as Lagat and others from the time.
We'd be foolish to think that cycling is so so so dirty, but that running is sort of clean.

What is he gonna do? Beat the sh*t out of Steve Magness? Nike wouldn't support that kind of behavior.
http://projects.registerguard.com/csp/cms/sites/web/news/cityregion/7122674-41/story.cspCan you explain yourself a little better? How does Lance or Magness say anything about El G or Lagat? Do you mean they are also examples of what can be done the clean way?Why do you think it is foolish to think cycling is dirty, but running is sort of clean? What is the connection to cycling and running?
