I've been off running for most of the last month and a half because of nagging IT band pain in the left leg. I had been running 60-65 mpw leading up to a mid-October marathon. Ran the marathon, then took three full days off. On the fourth day, I went out for a great ten miler. Maybe a bit fast, but I felt great, with no indication of injury trouble. Later that day my son wanted to go for a run, so I took him for a three mile jog. After a mile I started to get pain, that got progressively worse until I stopped and walked home. The next four or five weeks, I tried running a few miles about once each week. Without fail, the knee flared up at about 2.5 or 3 miles and I hobbled home. A week ago, I managed nearly three miles with no pain, then waited a few days and did four, then five a few days later. Only a hint of unfamiliar tightness at five miles, but no pain.
I'm very frustrated with how long it's taking to recover, and tempted to step back into bigger mileage now that I've done five without pain. I know people who've had chronic IT band problems, and worry about ending up like them. I haven't averaged less than 30 mpw in years, but I haven't got 25 total in over the last six weeks. My heart says run, but my head is telling me to go easy.
Can anyone who's been through a similar nagging IT band problem tell me how they've successfully or unsuccessfully pulled through?
