What's up with Michigan Head Job????
What's up with Michigan Head Job????
I was at unt a year ago and know the athletes there - sam burroughs was fired. They haven't updated the site yet, and a job opening is under the employment section of the website. It's unfortunate. He didn't DO anything - he and some athletes didn't see eye to eye. They wanted more money than other athletes even though they didn't score well enough and complained numerous times about him - and the head coach decided to find another. He is so fair that it hurts him sometimes.

Michigan is finding out why they have been so bad recently. They have bad internal policies and unworkable, individual contracts. They are being turned down because they are so far into these situations they can't get out of them.
They should just make the XC Coach the Head TF Coach because he has all of the power in the program. What their Administration has done, in their attempt to appease others over the years, is almost hilarious. But it is certainly coming out now as to how stupid it was for the TF Program.
Hey! Thanks for the input! Profound! Now I know track isn't a revenue generator.... Gee!
Bye

Yeah, I can blame the guy.
Don't accept Cincinnati until you're sure Texas is out. Tell Texas that Cincinnati offered you a job, but UT is your first choice. But tell them you won't leave Cincy dangling because it's a matter of principle. I would like to think they would respect that and make their offer. If you get offered UT, you call Cincy and tell them "no thanks." If not, you call Cincy and accept, then call the athletes. It adds like one more day to the process.
If I were at Texas, I don't think I would have a whole lot of expectations, assuming that my new coach would bolt again when given the chance. Or is integrity completely passe nowadays?
Ghosts well put, I could not agree more.

you're right on point here, G.o.A. I like what you said, "Tell Texas that Cincinnati offered you a job, but UT is your first choice. But tell them you won't leave Cincy dangling because it's a matter of principle." it shows respect to both institutions and class and integrity are character traits that should be passed on to future student-athletes, which I'm sure any AD would want to have a coach do.
perhaps your insight/ advice can be used in the future by other coaches who are reading this now.
Sorry kids, that is not how the game is played. If you don't like the rules don't play, but coach did the only thing he could do.

Can somebody translate this into English?
Thanks in advance.

The translation is this. Gibby has convinced the administration at Michigan that he should get 6 scholarships for distance runners. That is a tad less than the maximum allowable scholarships for men. Gibby is not a middle distance guy at all. So these 6 scholarships are sprinkled among 3k steeple, 5,000, and 10,000 meter runners. The new head coach would have a total of 6.5 scholarships for the rest of the program. It would be one thing if Gibby was scoring 40 points at the Big 10 Meet, and 215 points at the NCAA Meet with those scholarships. But the bang that Gibby is generating from having 50% of the total scholarships is very minimal. No coach in his right mind would come to Michigan under that losing structure. I have no dog in this fight, and I could care less what they do or who they hire. Im just presenting the facts Dano.
How is 6 a tad less than the maximum allowable for men? The max is 12.5.
My opinion Michigan needs to go to a combined program so they can get their assistants inline and be able to afford quality coaches at every event area. You have 2 distance coaches at the school in McGuire and Gibby. What has Gibby done with the recruits he has brought in?
Michigan is a done deal...announcement soon.
What about Uconn and West Virginia distance jobs?
Very close to the season for them to be looking, must be a formality....

Lets be honest though. Where should Michigan be spending their scholarships? They are not going to compete with the Texas A&M, LSU, USC, UCLA, Florida, etc type schools with sprinters.
Yes you could probably say something similar about their ability to compete with Oregon, Arkansas, Colorado, etc with distance runners, but I think they are a lot closer to that than the previous.
They also have a great opportunity to be good at throwing events.
Set up a model like the Arkansas of the past... Great distance runners and one other really strong area. In this case throws. Since you are Michigan you will from time to time get a great sprinter or jumper to help seal the deal.
Thanks Coach Gibby for that! Very insightful because the message board always wonders how some coaches get their jobs..
You now just have to hope your Adminisration feels its too close to football season to even think about track/xc and have you are already there and it would just be he easiest hire. Nice how you're even pitching Mo there who hasn't done a thing yet (how about a couple foreign hammer guys at least )
Problem is, Arkansas showed up for track and you only care about XC.
You are no John Mac.
Middle distance is where the scholarships need to go to have any success with an all-round program in the Big10. You need guys who can score in the 600, 800, mile, 3km, 5km, DMR and run xc.
Warhurst started out as a marathon guy who coached 10km runners, but eventually figured out you have to have guys score in a range of events on the track, and then coach them up to XC distances. McGuire does this with the women's teams also.
Gibby needs to start coaching athletes and stop trying to fit athletes into a pre-set system. Sure, you can have all your guys run 100-140 miles per week and have good success with a xc team, but that is NOT coaching. It is just a system. Coaching involves evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the individuals, and tailoring a program to best suit the energy systems of the athlete. The fastest Miler at Michigan this year was 4.10! What a joke.
Not sure when this turned into a Michigan program evaluation thread, or a bash Alex Gibby thread. Also, XC is a countable NCAA sport, separate from T&F, and I would imagine that the UM administration likes the fact that they have a good shot of winning the B1G in cross, as well as the director's cup points that come with making XC Nats.
Now, back to the jobs...

You get a call in the morning, you get an offer that is available until the end of the day. That's it.

Thank you Ghost--I completely agree. I also understand the time restraints on an offer, but Herbster surely had some insight that the Texas job would be opening up. I may be wrong here and it could have just happened and he made a game time decision, but I think the chances of that happening are unlikely.
At the end of the day, I think UC should be happy to have him change alliances now rather than have Herbster bounce after a year.
We should have another head coach named very soon.
Any word on A&M jumps job?
Illinois job?
LSU distance?
Ok - so who is the coach since you know all info son? Why hold out? Cripes
