From the British Milers' Club Journal - autumn 1999
Here is a quote from Peter Coe, the father and coach of Seb Coe:
"At the peak of his career and prior to the final preparation period of his very intensive speed work in some years Seb Coe did touch 70 miles/wk for 3 or 4 weeks, but his annual total was always very much lower."
This is also confirmed by Marius Bakken, the norwegian 5000m record holder who was once trained by Peter Coe and spent time in his home. A quote from him regarding this topic:
"I also looked back at my journal from 1996 when I spent time at Peter Coes house in London. We sat in his office discussion this particular topic when I asked him what Seb did at the most in the winter. He took out the 1981 schedules (when according to Coe Sr., Seb was at his very best) and showed me the 60-70 mile weeks (only a few of them that high)"
There you have it. A direct quote from his coach and an athlete that was also trained by his father.
Seb did not run high mileage. His highest weeks were 70 at his absolute career peak for 3-4 weeks. This business of him running 100 per week can finally end.
