new to running, my 5k is in the 20s. i can definitely see myself improving by at least 2-3 min in the next couple of years. I also want a decent job w/ 100k+ salary. which is harder? i always thought that the high paying jobs are there for anyone who wants them. is that not the case?

High paying jobs are there for anyone who wants them...ASSUMING that person has the necessary qualifications.
Unless you are a successful small business owner (most are not), the only reliable way to a six figure salary is a graduate degree: law, medicine, science, engineering, business. These virtually guarantee 6 figs, but also those jobs demand a lot of work. A LOT of work.

It depends on your talent for running. For me, a 6 figure salary is definitely harder as I have two prs equivalent to a sub 17 5k and yet work $10.50/hr job.
I've done both, and the sub-17 is definitely easier and has a wider reach for more people.

Which have you put more effort into? The 5k or the job? And not just effort, the RIGHT effort
So by netting do you mean six figures after taxes and other deductions?
Hitting $100K in salary is not very hard at all in states like CA and NY, particularly in the public sector, which is where the money is at these days unless you're a bona fide hard charger. In CA, prison guards hit $100K pretty quickly with a little OT. The bennys are ridiculosly good & the union gets whatever it wants. Once you have enough seniority to transfer to a minimum security prison or camp it's laughable how much you get paid for how little you do. Cops & teachers in NYC hit $100K pretty easily with some OT & the bennys are over the top compared to private sector workers (suburban NYC cops/teachers do even better - much better in some cases - check the salaries of Nassau/Suffolk County cops). Union electricians, steelworkers, etc. in the NY/NJ/CT area easily make $150K a year and are going home drunk as a skunk by 3:00 PM. after working for 2-3 hours (why do you think it cost so much more to build Met Life Stadium than the Cowboys' stadium - and it's not even as good). If you take one of these jobs at 21 you'll be at $100K by 25 & still have plenty of time to run. You'll also be laughing at all your friends who went into debt to go to college (you do need this to become a teacher but wait until you're hired & let your employer pay for grad school), grad school, etc., and are now making garbage in private sector jobs that they will be forced out of every 2 years.
I went under 17 minutes when I was about 15 years old.... I still don't make $100k.
Lots of people run well under 17 minutes by the time they're 16 years old. Almost nobody earns a 6 figure salary that early in life (maybe a few entertainers and an even smaller number of entrepreneurs). I'd say that the 6 figure salary is more difficult. For most people, it requires a college degree and a few years of work experience. A 17 minute 5K just requires ~1 hour of training per day for a time period ranging from a few months to a few years depending on talent.
I hit the $100K mark but have yet to hit the sub 17 mark. Hopefully, someday, I can do both.
My PR is like 17:30 in the 5k and that was in HS 12 years ago. I've been earning six figures since I was 25/26. They're both attainable goals I'd say.

I've done them both. I've lost my 5k fitness, but primarily due to CECS. We'll see if I can get them both at the same time. That would be something.
Getting the goals by themselves isn't all that difficult. Sub 17 means consistent 70 mile weeks for a couple years and an ounce of talent, and like they said with 6 figure jobs, if you're in the right industry you can get there.

I don't know, I broke 17 in my first official 5000/5K (it was on the track), but felt like an utter loser because I got lapped.
30+ years later I can't quite break 17 anymore, nor have I achieved a six figure income yet, desptite education and degrees out the wazoo and decades of experience. But looking at my crystal ball, actually do stand a chance for one of more of these levels within the next five years.
