Because of choices you made. Yeah, it would be great to live a gorgeous apartment on Central Park West, but if I choose to spend $6000 per month in rent, plus extras for parking spaces, any struggle I feel is entirely self imposed, because I could save $4500/month by just moving to Jersey.
What you're saying is, "$150,000 per year isn't that much if you spend it all on non-necessities." You choose to live in a posh area. Great. Enjoy it. But don't think that you don't have a lot of money just because you spend it all. Imagine you're fired or your company goes under and after months of looking, you can only get a job paying $50,000 per year, and you've got the new kid at home with your wife. Would you guys starve? No! You'd move to a cheaper place, cut back on your expenses, probably get rid of one of your cars and you'd make due. Like everyone else.
Try living in Monaco. I can tell you how not far $500,000 per year will go there.
