There is a significant chance that I will get dead last in my next race because it is the highest level of competition I've competed against. Although, I may actually beat a few people if I have a good day. How do you deal with this? Is it a badge of honor? Something to laugh at? Be ashamed of?
I got DFL in a Steeple one time. It wasn't fun, but I shrugged it off since I wasn't a Steepler. Whatever, right? That's why you race.
It is actually pretty hard to do! I have to really cherrypick a race with all fast dudes and no hobby-joggers to accomplish this.
The greatest part is you often get your own police escort as they close the course behind you. Awesome!

I hope he meant a track race... You have to really suck to get DFL on the roads.
Try being a Master in a college 400. Ouch! I don't mind, though. Most times, I'm only back a few meters.
Uh yeah...I knew that's what he meant....and I was just kidding. LOLZ

Nope. I WISH I had the chance though. That would mean I was in a SERIOUSLY good race, and for me that was never the case except for when some others who were worse than me were also entered. Would have been cool to barely qualify for something and then just get destroyed...unfortunately I was never good enough to do that so that I could finish DFL.
Props to you brother, but you should try like h*ll to not finish last.

I had a DFL 1:53.5 800 my sophomore year of college.
DFL at the Olympic 800 final this year was 1:43.77.
In college...finally made the fast heat of the conference indoor 3000...got sick the day before...DFL...got some pity claps out of it
I was DFL in the 800 my junior AND senior year at the state championship meet. My senior year I got sick the week before the race and was fried halfway through the 3200 (my 3rd race of the day) but my coaches made me run the 800 anyways. I was last by a good 5-10 seconds and I just started waving to the crowd. My coaches were pissed.
Got DFL when I was a freshman in high school in the conference 2 mile. Later as a freshman in college was DFL in the conference indoor 5K.
Also as a freshman in college I was sick before the NCAA east regional meet and finished, I think, 10th from last. I passed a few guys in the final 2 miles though so there's a chance I was DFL at one point.
Don't worry too much about it OP, chances are most of Letsrun has been DFL at one point.

guy on my team got DFL at XC nationals. That sucked
I was DFL in a 3k one time... went through 1600 in 4:17 and was already in last.
I passed a lady pushing a stroller in the last mile of a 5k to avoid the big DNF. I was in sub 17 minute shape but had an accident a few days before the race and "ran" over 57 minutes. I was even hepped up on pain killers and muscle relaxants to go that fast. Needless to say, I scrapped my half marathon I was going to run the following week.
Unfortunately, I was so slow, they put my time in the 10k results where I was far from last.

Start out with the slowest people. Stay with them as long as possible. If you go out too hard and then end up last you might look a little stupid, but if you start last and end last no one will give it a second thougt, and with the slower pace, you just might be able to hang and/or beat someone
In high school the last race of our regular season was a tri-meet with two other teams in our league. We were all undefeated against other leagues teams up to that point so it was winner take all. We were clear underdogs to the other two teams and my coach said our only shot was to go out really fast and see what happens. Each team was only allowed to enter their top 7 into the varsity race so there was nobody who sucked. I was our #5 guy but went out with the #2-#3 guys, like asked, and died badly towards the end. The guys who I normally beat on my team all ran conservatively and passed me. As I finished I got the pity claps. It was pretty embarrassing.
PENN RELAYS 10,000M College Championship. Went out in 4:23 and faded nicely to a DFL in 30- and change.
