So no plans to chase masters records?
DK: That doesn’t seem a focus for me at all. I think once I stop giving to the sport and inspiring people with great performances, it’s time for me to step aside competitively and help the next generation of elite athletes. My husband, Andrew, and I are taking over the Mammoth Track Club to be a member and elite running group. We want to focus on the elites and get them ready for the Olympic Games in 2016. If I can mentor someone to break my records, then I would love to do that. That’s going to be my post-competitive mission: get other elite athletes to the top level so they can perform on the world stage and take home medals and win championships.
That’s exciting news. When does the transition take place?
DK: It’s happening now. The big story is we’re building a track in Mammoth Lakes. We’ve been fundraising for the last five years. They’re putting in the infield now. Two weeks after the New York City Marathon the facility will be completely finished [the ribbon cutting is scheduled for November 17] and we’ll merge the High Sierra Striders, my husband’s club and the local running club here in Mammoth, with the Mammoth Track Club.
We feel the clubs will be stronger together. Andrew and I will be taking on a larger role with the elites in that I will be fundraising and mentoring, and Andrew will take on the role of head coach, using the same philosophies that have earned the team so much success the past 11 years. We’ll put on about 10 races or competitions throughout the next year, build up our elite division, as well as open membership to people around the world. We’re trying to get the funding and major sponsorships solidified so all the elite athletes will have to worry about is coming to practice every day and performing at a high level. We’re really excited about it, really believe in it, and feel we’re combining our two greatest passions, running and the town we love so much. I get goose bumps when I talk about it. [A formal announcement about the new Mammoth Track Club will take place Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. at the New York City Marathon.]
